From Andrew Sandoval:

REBIRTH OF A CLASSIC: OUT OF PRINT FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story RETURNS!

First published in 2005, Andrew Sandoval’s The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story is the definitive reference source for the history of Michael Nesmith, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork. Now completely rewritten, redesigned and substantially expanded to more than double the original content, the new editions of the book (which cover the years 1942 to 1970) span over 700 pages. Lavishly illustrated in full color and printed at the highest quality in three unique configurations, copies of The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story are now available for reservation from Beatland Books.

The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story explores all of the band’s recording dates (with full session personnel) based on a first-hand, real time review of their unissued session tapes and internal recording documents, plus the American Federation of Musicians’ historic contracts. The Monkees series shooting dates and those for the feature film Head are also presented with reproductions of unpublished stills and unique call sheets. The book further captures every concert appearance made by the Monkees or its members, as well television and radio appearances.

The product of four decades of research, The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Storyfeatures exclusive and previously unpublished interviews with the group and their associates conducted over a 32-year period by author Andrew Sandoval. The diary format reveals thousands of pages of newly discovered legal documents, internal memos, contracts and contemporary news reporting. Hundreds of images (many previously unpublished) are gathered together for the first time to take you through the story visually.

Even if you own every Monkees reissue, have collected every book about the group and can access further information on the Internet, you still will not have the material contained in this edition.

The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story is singularly the largest and most extensive study of the group ever published.

POP! The Lost 1972 Davy Jones TV Special

  1. By Fred Velez

Davy Jones performing ‘Clowns’ on the ABC Television Special ‘POP’.

A few years after The Monkees officially called it a day, the individual members pursued their solo careers. Michael Nesmith followed his muse into Country Rock. Micky Dolenz resumed his acting career and dabbled in his solo music, which despite showing a lot of promise, was sadly ignored. Peter Tork, the first to leave the group, tried to launch his solo career with his group Release. The project failed to get off the ground and Peter disappeared from the scene for a few years.

Next to Michael Nesmith, Davy Jones was the most publicly prominent ex-Monkee in the early 70’s. He had some success with his first solo single on Bell Records ‘Rainy Jane’ which went Top 60 on Billboard and Top 40 in Cashbox. It did better in Canada where it charted in the Top 20. His self titled solo album for Bell didn’t do as well in the charts. He re-pursued his theater acting career and recreated his Tony nominated role of the Artful Dodger in the Los Angeles revival of ‘Oliver!’ which starred Sir Ron Moody recreating his celebrated role of Fagin from the 1968 movie musical version.

During the 70’s Davy made various TV appearances on shows like Laugh In, Merv Griffin, Make Room For Grand Daddy with Danny Thomas, and most memorably on The Brady Bunch.

In 1972 the ABC Television Network developed a Saturday afternoon special aimed at pre-Teens that would showcase some of the biggest Teen Stars as well as featuring educational segments that would appeal to young people.

Davy Jones was signed to be the host of the special which was titled ‘POP!’. Davy’s guests included The Osmonds, The Mike Curb Congregation, the female musical group Sunday’s Child, actor Michael Gray and comics Hudson & Laurie. The special was a pilot for a proposed regular series that was to start in September, 1972.

It was extensively promoted in many of the Teen magazines at the time like Tiger Beat and 16. ABC also ran a promo of ‘POP!’ with pictures of Davy and a female voice saying “Davy Jones, you’ll fall in Love with him All Over Again!”.

The special aired on ABC, Saturday July 15th, 1972 right after ‘American Bandstand’. It only aired once. If there was any intention of making it a regular series, ABC never followed up on it. After it’s initial airing ‘POP!’ vanished and was long forgotten except by the fans who watched it, some who recorded the show on primitive cassette tape recorders and who’ve held onto their clippings from the Teen mags.

Recently on a couple of Monkees Facebook pages, some fans found and posted photos of Davy hosting the ‘POP!’ special. Soon, more photos and clippings from the Teen magazines were posted, sparking interest in this long forgotten artifact of Monkees history. A lot of fans saw the special and remembered it. Others didn’t even know it aired at the time and missed it. Many more, especially recent fans, didn’t even know that it even existed!

While going through the Facebook postings, a memory jogged itself. I recall back in the pre-home video/smartphone era of the 1970’s, I was a 8mm/Super 8 film enthusiast with my own movie camera and projector. I used to film Saturday morning rerun episodes of The Monkees off my old black & white TV set, and after developing the film, watch my results from my projector to a screen. The quality was never great, but it was the best one could do in those pre-VCR days. So, on July 15th, 1972, I was aiming my trusty little movie camera on my black & white TV screen and filmed what I could of the ‘POP!’ Special, trying to capture as much footage of Davy Jones as the little roll of film had room for. I also got a brief couple of seconds of the Osmonds and Mike Curb and a snatch of a Partridge Family TV promo. I was able to film some bits of Davy in clown makeup as he performed the song ‘Clowns’, looking very sad as he held out a flower to an imaginary girl. After getting the developed film back and watching it, I recalled the quality being not as good as I would have liked, but it was watchable. After a few more viewings of it, I placed the little roll of film into a drawer and as life went on, I soon forgot about it.

Flash forward to the present, and the memory of that little roll of film jogged forth with the recent Facebook interest in the special. Since then I’ve made several major moves and I had gotten married to my Lovely Linda. Did I still have that little roll of film or did it get lost in one of my many moves?

I proceeded to go through a few boxes in our basement that I knew still had some of my old home movie films in them. After going through a couple of boxes and coming up zero, I opened up one more that contained a few family movies in them which I wanted to check out too.

I soon came across one little roll of film on which I had long ago hand written the title: POP!

Photo: Fred Velez

I found it! But, was it still in good enough condition to be run on a projector?

Linda and I went through a comical search for a working regular 8mm movie projector. The light bulb on my old dual 8 projector no longer worked and getting a replacement would be very expensive. Linda then remembered her dad’s old 1940’s 8mm projector and was able to locate it. She knew how to run it, and after a few test tries with a different film roll which I recorded with my iPhone, we then proceeded to carefully thread the ‘POP!’ reel on the projector. We turned on the projector and on a little screen we set up, my phone started recording the images being projected.

Fuzzy images of The Monkees came up and I remembered that I must have filmed bits of the Monkees episode ‘Ghost Town’ on it. After a couple of more images of the 1967 Davy with the Monkees ran, suddenly, an image of Davy wearing a shorter 70’s haircut flashed on the screen, and I knew it was the ‘POP!’ Special. I managed to have filmed about a minute of the special and I captured as much of the images as best I could on my iPhone. Re-watching the results showed that the footage quality was still not the best and the iPhone recording was even more wonky. Still, it was better than nothing. I was able to apply as a soundtrack Davy’s demo of the song ‘Clowns’ which he had performed on the special. (The song can be found on Davy’s album ‘Wild Ponies: Lost & Found Rarities Vol.1’).

I uploaded the video of the footage on YouTube so that other fans could get a small glimpse and a taste of this rare and almost forgotten piece of Monkees/Davy Jones history.

A better transfer of my home movie of ‘POP!’. Many thanks to Mark Nelson.

Hopefully, with fan interest growing for the special, a full and complete copy of Davy Jones ‘POP!’ Special will turn up for original fans to watch again and later generations of Monkees/Davy fans to enjoy too.

Someday, someday. 😉

(Many thanks to Judith Supple Hadlock, Esther Fitzpatrick and other fans on Facebook for sharing their photos, clippings and memories of the ‘POP!’ Special).

A Statement From Peter Tork’s Family

A Statement From Peter Tork’s Family

We are all saddened to share the news that Peter Thorkelson — friend, father, husband, grandfather, philosopher, goofball, entertainer — died peacefully this morning at a family home in Connecticut. Peter succumbed to a 10 year bout with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare cancer of the salivary glands. Peter’s energy, intelligence, silliness, and curiosity were traits that for decades brought laughter and enjoyment to millions, including those of us closest to him. Those traits also equipped him well to take on cancer, a condition he met with unwavering humor and courage.

We are all still raw, and still have much to process, but we are also feeling appreciation for Peter’s contributions. We are grateful that we have an extended support network thanks to the attentive energy and dedication of Peter’s fans worldwide. We want those fans to know with absolute certainty that your spirit and goodwill fed Peter with continued energy and force (and of course humor).

With that, we ask that our family have time and space to grieve in privacy.

We are asking fans who would like to make contributions in Peter’s name to donate to the scholarship fund at The Institute for The Musical Arts in Massachusetts, a nonprofit that provides young women with music education, music recording, and music community.

Hello from Roysdale.

Latest update on the FNBR tour — my health is stabilizing and I have green-lit the rest of tour tour that I had to cancel with Micky. Not sure what might happen in the future but looking forward to the dates that will start (in just a few weeks — yikes!) in Houston. Then on to Austin, Dallas and places Northeast!

Great band, great players — music sounds better than ever. See you on stage.

Some concerts were recorded during the original June, 2018 leg of the tour and hopefully a live album will be issued in time for the 2019 tour.

Micky Dolenz Performs with New Monkees!

August 20, 2018 by
Filed under blogs, Fred Velez, micky, monkees alert, news, news feed

On August 18th, 2018, Micky Dolenz performed with fans at a charity karaoke fundraiser event set up by Monkees promoter Jodi Ritzen at San Fernando Valley’s Winnetka Bowl in honor of the Los Angeles Police Department.

History was made during the event when Micky was joined onstage by Marty Ross and Dino Kovas of the New Monkees, the first time members from both Monkees groups have ever performed together in public. They were also joined by Micky’s sister Coco and ‘Dukes of Hazard’ star Catherine Bach (Daisy Dukes).

The fans who attended this historic Monkees moment had a great time and the money raised went to a good cause.

More in-depth details on the event can be read at the Yahoo! News link attached.

Michael Nesmith Recovering From Quadruple Bypass Surgery

According to Rolling Stone Magazine, Michael Nesmith is recovering from quadruple bypass surgery after canceling the remaining June dates Mike & Micky Monkees shows.

Link: Rolling Stone – Michael Nesmith In Recovery

Quoting Nesmith from the article:

“I was using the words ‘heart attack’ for a while,” says Nesmith. “But I’m told now that I didn’t have one. It was congestive heart failure. It has taken me four weeks to climb out of it. If anybody ever comes up to you on the street and offers you [bypass surgery] for free, turn them down. It hurts.”

Andrew Sandoval commented on his Facebook page.

‘ A little added perspective from Andrew Sandoval:

The last month has been utter hell seeing my friend suffering. So many people were demanding answers, but it was simply a time for healing and privacy. The information age has caused too many to be pushy and inconsiderate – there I said it. This guy is a member of my extended family and I am so thrilled to hear the happiness in his voice now and the eagerness to play his beautiful songs for the people.”

Christian Nesmith’ Facebook update:

Nez’s surgery and clarifying the Rolling Stone article.

On the day of his surgery I was in LA and immediately made plans to go to Monterey. I was there first thing the next morning and I was with him as often as hospital policy and sleep needs would allow.

Here’s what RS got wrong. He did not spend a month in the hospital.

Nez was in ICU for 6 days, a little longer than average but well within the window. He spent another two and a half days in a regular room and then I drove him home. I’m sure it seemed like a month to him, though.

The first week at home he progressed from just being able to take a few steps to being fully autonomous – dressing, shower, bathroom. Every day he was stronger and clearer.

By the way, full anesthesia is some scary stuff and the most difficult thing for me was watching him climb out of that hole mentally. It’s like “is he ever going to be his old self again?”

Well, not only is he himself but, from where I stand, at 4 weeks after the surgery this last Monday, he’s healthier, more energetic, and clearer than when he went in.

AND he’s super excited to do these shows. I was with him for 17 days. Since I’ve been back in LA I talk to him every day on the phone and he is galvanized and enthusiastic. These shows and future ones are a driving goal and inspiration for him to get back to fighting weight. He actually went to the gym day before yesterday. Ha.

So you all have to come to these next shows because I have a feeling you’re going to see a Nez that’s on fire and rarin’ to go.

For anyone to go through open heart surgery is hard enough. But to do it at 75, well, let’s just say he’s a tough old buzzard. Lol.

I have to say a huge thank you to Jessica Kent, Circe Link, Robin Campbell and Melodie Akers. They we were absolutely instrumental and invaluable in their help with his needs after the surgery.

And it has been good to see all my siblings, Jessica Nesmith, Jonathan Nesmith, and Jason Nesmith rally to the cause. Nothing like family.

So, I NEVER wanna go through THAT again. But the upshot is that this surgery quite literally saved his life and to know I have many more days with him off and on stage couldn’t be regarded by me as any greater of a blessing.

Thanks to all of you for your support and understanding through this very heavy ordeal.

We’re coming to ya soon to show our gratitude.

Peace

The September First National Band Redux shows are still on with some additional dates to be announced.

More Of The Monkees Deluxe Edition

Release Date: 12/15/2017

Who’s ready for even more of MORE? In honor of 50th anniversary this year, we’ve super-sized MORE OF THE MONKEES with a staggering 91 tracks including 55 previously-unreleased alternate takes, remixes, and newly discovered concert recordings from 1967, the band’s earliest-known live tracks, as well as a bonus 7” of “I’m A Believer” (Remix)/”(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone” (Vocals Only).

“This is the most exciting archival dig through The Monkees’ vault since 2009’s THE BIRDS, THE BEES AND THE MONKEES DELUXE EDITION. Every track is newly mastered for this set; the live material is the most historically significant of their career,” says Andrew Sandoval, who produced the set and wrote a new essay for its expansive booklet.

MORE OF THE MONKEES: SUPER DELUXE EDITION significantly expands the special edition of MORE OF THE MONKEES released in 2006. Along with mono and stereo mixes of the original album, the SUPER DELUXE EDITION takes listeners into the studio for the making of the album through extensive studio outtakes. Many make their debut here, including the first recorded versions of: “Words,” “Valleri,” “Hold On Girl” and more. Backing tracks for early version of “Sometime In The Morning,” “I’m A Believer” and “Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)” offer a behind-the-scenes perspective on the creative process.

However, the set’s most historic aspect is the inclusion of newly discovered unreleased live music. Recorded in Arizona in 1967, these 10 tracks are The Monkees’ earliest-known live recordings. The performance highlights songs from the band’s 1966 self-titled debut (“I Wanna Be Free” and “Papa Gene’s Blues”), along with covers of Ray Charles’ “I Got A Woman” and Willie Dixon’s “You Can’t Judge A Book By The Cover.”

Limited to just 4,500 numbered copies and housed in a hardbound 7″x7″ box, the collection is available exclusively from monkees.com and rhino.com. MORE OF THE MONKEES: SUPER DELUXE EDITION will be available on December 15, but you can pre-order now.

Review: The Monkees Head Alternate Vinyl LP

By Fred Velez

Friday Music has issued The Monkees ‘Head Alternate’, a limited anniversary vinyl edition of the ‘Head’ soundtrack. The new edition has alternate mixes of the songs and tracks from the original soundtrack which originally appeared on the Rhino Handmade ‘Head’ boxset. (Because this is a remastered/remix of the ‘Head’ soundtrack, the Jack Nicholson mixes are not on the album so his credit is not on the back cover).

The alternative songs include the stereo mix of ‘Porpoise Song’ with the long coda, a stereo mix of ‘Ditty Diego’, a stereo mix of ‘Circle Sky’ with Michael Nesmith’s vocals up front and clear and are not buried in the mix as in the original version, a rough stereo mix of ‘Can You Dig It’ with Peter Tork’s vocals. Side two has a alternate stereo mix of ‘As We Go Along’, a remix of ‘Daddy’s Song’ which mixes an alternate vocal by Davy Jones with scatting from Michael Nesmith’s version of the song and includes the slow verse reading by Davy. This version of ‘Daddy’s Song’ is longer than the released version. The rough mix acetate version of ‘Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again’ has a different vocal by Peter Tork which features more of the backing track and a very prominent bass line. The album was mastered by Joe Reagoso and is dedicated to the memory of Davy Jones.

The album is pressed on 180 Gram translucent gold vinyl. The front cover of the album is on gold foil and the back cover is an alternate color shot of the Monkees originally issued on the Japanese version of the ‘Head’ album.

For collectors of Monkees vinyl records, the ‘Head Alternate’ is a nice addition.

From Steve Marinucci Monkees Examiner Blog.

The June 18th issue of Billboard magazine, which was released June 10, is proof positive that the Monkees have a solid success with the “Good Times!” album. It placed No. 6 on the week’s Billboard Album Sales chart, which put them in the company of such contemporary names as Dierks Bentley, Beyoncé, Blake Shelton, Fifth Harmony and Drake who were just in front of them.

As announced earlier in the week, “Good Times!” debuted on the Billboard 200 album chart at #14. That was a better showing this week than Thrice (“To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere”) at No. 15, Prince (“The Very Best of Prince”) at No. 16, G-Eazy (“When It’s Dark Outside”) at No. 17 and the soundtrack for the musical “Hamilton” at No. 18. And languishing a short distance underneath those were Justin Bieber at No. 20, and Kanye West at No. 21. Billboard reported “Good Times!” sold 23,000 album units in the week ending June 2 with 22,000 in what the magazine called “pure album sales.” It said was the group’s best showing by Nielsen Music since it began tracking data in 1991.

“I’d be happy if we just had made the Top 40,” Micky Dolenz said in an earlier statement to Monkees Examiner. “The reception is unexpected and exciting. I knew the album was good and the reaction makes it even more rewarding.” Another sign of respect being shown to the group is that the Monkees also placed at No. 44 on this week’s Billboard Artist 100.

Extra! Nez & Micky Skype Monkee Jam!

Reported by Fred Velez

The Monkee Jam fan convention at the Clarion Empire Hotel in Seacaucus, NJ received a special surprise when Micky Dolenz did a pre-recorded Skype introduction for Romeo Delight, the Van Halen tribute band led by his brother-in-law Buddy Blanch.

Later in the evening before Circe Link and Christian Nesmith started their set, Christian did a Skype call to his father Michael Nesmith who said hello to the delighted fans and introduced Christian and Circe’s set. Christian also coax the fans to let Nez know what they thought of the success of the Monkees Good Times album to which they responded with rousing cheers and applause which Nesmith humbly appreciated. Kudos to convention organizer Jodi Ritzen for setting up this delightful surprise.
