Micky Dolenz says he’s “a little torn” over the use of the 1967 Monkees track “Goin’ Down” in a recent episode of Breaking Bad, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Dolenz, the singer-drummer of the group, said he is a fan of the show but the juxaposition between the sunny sounds of the Monkees and Breaking Bad’s grave subject matter was unsettling for him.

“‘Goin’ Down’ has nothing to do with drugs, obviously,” he said, “and I certainly don’t condone meth – that is nasty stuff that kills a lot of people and ruins a lot of lives… On the other hand, I like the TV show; it’s very well-made.”

Dolenz and the Monkees won’t make much money from the licensed song, as the group – originally formed for TV – forfeited rights to their recordings and image. “The record company controls the licensing and mechanicals for all the material that you do,” said Dolenz. “In movies and TV, they don’t even have to ask unless you wrote the song. Like, I had no idea ‘I’m a Believer’ was going to be in Shrek.”

The surviving members of the Monkees are set to tour the U.S. in November, which will be the first time Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork have played together since 1997.
