June 28, 1998 Fort Worth Star Telegram

Fall promises new works by best-selling authors

Jeff Guinn/Fort Worth Star-Telegram

George Stephanopoulos dishes dirt, Nicholas Evans follows up “The Horse Whisperer,”
and Danielle Steel takes a risk by writing about the death of her 19-year-old son.

What else is in store for book lovers this fall? For starters, new works from established
authors Philip Roth, Ellen Gilchrist, Paul Theroux and John Edgar Wideman.

And, oh yeah. Dame Agatha Christie returns from the dead.

Ex-Monkee Michael Nesmith’s “The Long, Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora” (St.
Martin’s, $24.95, November) is not expected to rival last year’s “Cold Mountain” as a
critically acclaimed first novel. Plus, Davy and Mickey and Peter aren’t in it.

the American Legion Hall, 143 S. Lemon St. Orange, Ca. 92705. All ages

filming it for promotional video, and maybe sell tapes of the show.

Thanks, Brad! You’re the coolest..

Subject: Monkees Tribute Show

Here’s a review of a Monkees tribute show by a band called Losers’ Lounge,
one of those groups made up of people from different NYC bands. The review
appeared in this week’s New York Press.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Losers’ Lounge
Fez
September 18

Reviewed by Ken Marks

A tribute to the Monkees: a brilliant and perfect subject for Losers’
Lounge. Plenty of extra-familiar tunes to lovingly re-create and/or goof
on. Plenty of rockers to keep the energy level high. And plenty of real
obscure material to interpret any freakin’ way you want. I mean, have you
ever heard of “Randy Scouse Git”? Do you know how “PO Box 9847” goes? Could
you sing one line of “Daily Nightly”? Me neither. These songs (and many
like them) are buried in the interior of Monkees albums, or maybe they were
just performed on the tv show and never made it to a record. I just don’t
know.

We watched the show in junior high, and kind of enjoyed it despite the
obvious, prefab A Hard Day’s Night rip-off vibe. It was definitely
different for tv, and colorful and peppy, if not too subtle. We dug some of
the singles a lot, tolerated the rest. But I never owned a Monkees album.
The only vinyl I have that vaguely qualifies is a DJ 45 (stereo one side,
mono the other) by Micky Dolenz called “Daybreak.” Written and produced by
Harry Nilsson, the 1973 Romar label says it’s “From the forthcoming Apple
Film ‘Son of Dracula.'” It’s a really crazy record, 2:15 of absolutely
manic, driving dementia.

I should probably give it to Joe McGinty, the piano player who leads the
great seven-piece house band and is the tireless Big Daddy behind these
Loser evenings, because I’m sure he’ll know just the right performer to do
it up if he ever revives this particular edition of the Lounge. But the
point is I can’t vouch for the provenance of a lot of the raw material
McGinty and his cohorts, collaborators and saboteurs chose to cover this
time out. Luckily, intellectual acuity was not mandatory. It rarely is.

Which is not to say that the performers took their responsibilities
lightly. Everybody was out for a good time, but it was also serious
professional rock ‘n’ roll business. The commitment of each and every
singer on the 26-song bill was total, so while there were plenty of laughs
there were even more moments of unironic pop pleasure. The show opened with
the house band doing a straight-ahead version of “Hey Hey We’re the
Monkees,” straight ahead if you ignore the fact that the repeat was sung in
Spanish. Alice Cohen, of Espadrille, really kicked the thing into high with
a take-no-prisoners “I’m a Believer.” Nick Danger had a weirdly operatic
approach to “Girl,” and Richard Barone did a sweet, spot-on re-creation of
“Daydream Believer.” Amy Rigby brought just the right degree of twang to
Mike Nesmith’s “Some of Shelly’s Blues” and Lenny Zenith, the singer in
Jennifer Convertible, did “Porpoise Song” (from “Head,” a movie featuring
no one in a beret), one of the Lounge band’s very cool psychedelic
excursions. Sean Altman demonstrated a terribly scary four-Monkee-headed
talking hand puppet, then brought his bright pop sensibility to bear on
“She.”

And I’m leaving out about 20 others. The tribute didn’t make me want to go
back and listen to all my old Monkees albums again, but it did make me want
to go out and hear these singers and their bands the next time they play.

Reccently, the VH1 schedule on their web page showed that The Monkees would be
on on Oct 4th, Sunday from 9:00-11:00 am, but I just checked the page and
clicktv.com and neither mentioned anything of The Monkees being on tomorrow.
It`s a real drag, but we have to remember that VH1 has done this before. I
would suggest that we keep e-mailing our letters asking them to bring The
Monkees back. It does help, all our letters from the past have, so lets all
keep trying 🙂

Peace,
Janna

I was watching tv tonight and on the movie Real Genius with Val Kilmer
and Gabe Jarrett (1984) right before the part where they are studying
for exams and one guy goes nuts, Val Kilmer’s character, Chris Knight,
is wearing a MONKEE T-SHIRT!!! I was so surprized. I’ve seen that movie
a ton of times and never saw it before! Just thought you guys might want
to know!

Peace, Love, Happiness, and Monkees!

Please note that the Dec. 3rd Teen Idol Tour date at Soaring Eagle
Casino in Mt. Pleasant, MI is a “no go”. There was a lot of confusion
about this date so I recently checked on it. When I called the venue
they informed me that the show was in the works but was eventually
cancelled.

Apparently, the venue is still promoting the show and they are stating
that tickets will go on sale on November 5th. I just spoke with
Paradise Artists, the booking agent for the Teen Idol Tour, and the
official word is that the concert has been postponed until 1999. The
date’s status is “TBA”. I told Paradise about Soaring Eagle promoting
the show. Again, the representative stressed that Davy, Peter and Bobby
will NOT be performing a Teen Idol show there on December 3rd.

Sorry to disappoint the Michigan fans but you now have something to look
forward to in 1999.

Peace and love,
Kimberly

I recently rented Real Genius and searched for the Monkees t-shirt
discovered by “Jewels,” and much to my suprise I saw a frequent visitor to
the Monkees show. Monte Landis plays Dr. Dodds on Real Genius and for the
true Monkee fan it’s easy to recognize him from his many anti-Monkee
characters on the series. Check it out!

Today on the Sci-Fi Channel’s “Star Trek Special Edition” during one of
the “Insights” segments, at the very beginning, they mention how Chekov
was patterned after Davy Jones, play a bit of the theme song, and show a
picture or two. Later they mention them again when they discuss his hair
length. It’s on again today if you can catch it, it’s pretty cool. It
re-airs at 11:30pm Eastern.

Just got confirmation of a few more venues where David will be
performing. Thought I would pass them along. 🙂

*NEW* With the Teen Idol Tour
5/6/99 Soaring Eagle Casino, Mt. Pleasant, MI

*NEW* In addition to the David solo dates sent out before:*
1/14/99 Prairie Meadows Racetrack, Altoona, IA
(with Peter Noone)

*UPDATED INFO*
2/16 – 2/23 David will be performing on the Royal Caribbean
cruiseship, The Grandeur. David will be “straddling”
two cruises. He will perform one time on each cruise.
The first performance will mostly likely be on the 18th
and sometime the following week for the second.

Incidently, the Royal Caribbean Entertainment Department stated
that Micky Dolenz is also doing several cruises this year; however,
none will overlap with David’s. Don’t know if this is true or not but I
know Hoo will keep everyone posted. (Very special thanks to Linda V. for
the info!)

Peace and love,

Although it has been mentioned on the alert list recently that Davy Jones
will be playing a February solo date in Buffalo, NY, Davy’s booking agent
assures us that that date is in fact a PRIVATE date, not something that is
open for Monkees fans to attend.

St. Martins Press just informed Nez’ PR firm that the ship date for
the hardcover of “The Long Sandy Hair Of Neftoon Zamora” has been moved to
November 16. This means we won’t get them until the end of November.
Apparently there was some hold up with the cover.

A note for all of you: the Monkees (and the Beatles too) were mentioned on
Comedy Central’s “Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist”. One of the comedians was
talking about being delusional of the 60’s, and was convinced that the Beatles
were stealing from the Monkees! They showed a drawing of each group, in
Squigglevision!!!! (very cute )

For anyone who missed it, the same episode will air again on Sunday night, I
think midnight Eastern, and will surely reair several times in it’s Monday
night timeslot; CC repeats shows a lot.

There was a Monkee mention during Star Trek today. On the “Star trek
Insights” part Walter Koenig (sp?) was talking about why he was hired
and he said it was so that Star Trek would appeal to the young audience,
and he mentioned the Monkees and Davy Jones. The same episode will be on
again on the Sci Fi channel at 11:30pm eastern tonight.

This morning, WDHA 105.5 in NY called Davy Jones at his Pennsylvania home. He
was talking from his cordless phone while gardening in his backyard! He
basically just gave the latest on his tour dates and happenings, etc. He was
on with Danny Bonaduce of the Partridge family. Pretty cool stuff! Thought I
might let you know……

HENDRIX, FLEETWOOD MAC, AND THE MONKEES ON DVD

Rhino Home Video Expands Its DVD Catalog on December 1 with the Addition of
Three First-Class Titles to the Format

LOS ANGELES – What do Jimi Hendrix, The Monkees, and Fleetwood Mac have in
common? These very different yet influential musicians are all stars of
Rhino Home Video’s second wave of DVD titles, hitting streets December 1.
Previously available only on VHS, the DVD versions of Jimi Hendrix: Rainbow
Bridge, The Monkees: Our Favorite Episodes, and Fleetwood Mac: Rumours
offer the clearest, sharpest picture, enhanced sound quality, and several
special bonus features.

Rhino Home Video’s current DVD titles carry a suggested retail list price
of $24.95 and are available via retail outlets or by calling RhinoDirect at
(800) 432-0020 (Consumer) or (800) 843-3670 (Trade) or through the Rhino
Website at www.rhino.com/video.

JIMI HENDRIX: RAINBOW BRIDGE
Finally available on DVD, this is Rainbow Bridge completely restored to its
original, uncut length from a recently discovered and only remaining 16mm
print in existence. As a special bonus, we have added 12 minutes of rare
trailers that until recently were packed away in a warehouse! Performed
only three months before his death, Jimi electrifies the audience during
this
legendary July 1970 gig atop Hawaii’s Haleakala Volcano.

THE MONKEES: OUR FAVORITE EPISODES
Previously only available inside The Monkees Lunchbox, Our Favorite
Episodes is finally offered as a separate program on a 110-minute DVD.
Features new interviews of Davy, Mike, Micky, and Peter discussing their
personal fave TV episodes from the classic Monkees series, which then
follow. Includes “Hitting The High Seas” (Davy), “Monkees Vs. Machine”
(Peter), “The Frodis Caper” (Micky), and “Fairy Tale” (Mike). A bonafide
collectible for any Monkees afficianado.

FLEETWOOD MAC: RUMOURS
Released in February 1977, Rumours skyrocketed to #1 on the U.S. album
chart and found equal success worldwide. Here is the definitive story on
DVD of the making of this phenomenal album, which has truly earned its
place in the pantheon of rock music history. The video cassette of this
program debuted the acclaimed Classic Albums series on January 27. Finally,
Fleetwood Mac fans can enjoy such classic hits as “Never Going Back Again,”
“You Make Loving Fun,” “Rhiannon,” “Dreams,” “Don’t Stop,” and “Gold Dust
Woman” in glorious DVD quality.

These three releases follow-up Rhino Home Video’s successful 1998 DVD
launch last July:

THE MONKEES: HEAD
Originally released in 1968, The Monkees: Head was the group’s only
feature-length motion picture. The DVD version is completely remastered
from original 35mm prints to full-frame format and
features eight minutes of extra trailers never before available.

PAUL McCARTNEY: IN THE WORLD TONIGHT
An intimate look at the making of Paul McCartney’s 1997 Grammy-nominated
album, Flaming Pie, with a little help from friends Ringo Starr, Steve
Miller, Jeff Lynne, and George Martin.

WALKING TALL
Based on the real-life story of a Tennessee lawman who almost
single-handedly rids a small town
of organized crime. Joe Don Baker stars as the small-town sheriff. A true
cult classic.
