TOUR NEWS!!!!!!!!!

From Ward today 8/5:

Also adding Mile High Stadium in Denver (after a soccer game!) 9/6.
That would be Colorado Rapids soccer. Rapids ticket office is
303-299-1599, and Mile High Stadium number is 303-458-4849. Folks at those
numbers claim it’s not yet confirmed, so give them some time before you
start bombarding them with calls.

Ward also sez:

We are working on simulcasting the Manhattan show on the House of Blues
website (full audio with some stop-action video). Present plan is to
stay in US through New Years Eve, then do Japan/Australia in Jan/Feb. 98

****

Monkees trading cards: I believe you can still purchase the factory sets
from Cornerstone, 520-722-1304. If you’re looking for sealed boxes (which
Cornerstone is sold out of), here’s a dealer who still has some left: Cindy
Ferrier, 609-443-2974.

*****

I called The Today Show. They said yes the guys are confirmed for 8/22.
They won’t be in the studio, they’ll be outside on the stage in Rockefeller
Plaza where they have musical guests every Friday in the summer. People
start arriving at the outdoor stage around 5 or 5:30 a.m. The musical
segment is at 8:30….there’s an eentsy interview bit outdoors and then
they’ll do 3 songs, 4 if the crowd is loud. As for getting on camera,
“signs help a lot,” I was told, “especially signs that mention Matt or
Katie.” Looking weird won’t get you on camera, they tell me; mostly the
camerafolk look for “normal everyday people with cute signs”.
Yes, the appearance is “weather permitting”….they won’t have it if
there’s a “torrential downpour” because they don’t want anyone getting electrocuted.
The crowd at the Friday morning concerts averages about 5000 people.

Does that answer everyone’s questions?

7/23/97:

The official word from the Universal Amphitheater is that the UA
show has tentatively been rescheduled for November 8. If the
paperwork is completed as scheduled, a confirmation will be
announced next week.

What does that mean for us? Well, the convention is still on, concert
or no concert! As of today, Davy and Micky are still confirmed as
convention guests. David has stated that he will be there.

Convention hours for Saturday have now been extended to
9am-midnight.

NEW on the tentative guest list: Members of The Hellecasters

7/22/97:

We regret to announce that the Monkees concert at the Universal
Amphitheater on September 13 has definitely been postponed. This
is not because of The Monkees – the UA has decided to use that
date for David Bowie instead. Ward Sylvester and Harold Bronson
are tryin to get the concert rescheduled as close as possible to the
the original date. If we’re very lucky, it’s possible there still could be
a concert that weekend.

The Monkees organization is working to help make sure that the
Monkees will still be able to appear at the convention that weekend.
The only thing that could prevent them from attending is if they’re out
of state, due to rescheduling.

Newly confirmed guests*: Harold Bronson; The Characters
Newly tentative: Andrew Sandoval; John London
More to be announced soon!
*Please note that all guests and scheduled times are subject to change.

Dealers so far:
Monkees Tour merchandise
Hercules Promotions table (Davy)
Rhino records
Henry Diltz
Michael G. Bush
Bill Groves (TV Chronicles)
James Lee Stanley (Beechwood Productions)
Gary Strobl
The Characters
The Hellecasters (!!!)

As soon as we know more about the concert, we’ll let you know!
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this rescheduling will work out to
our advantage!

7/16/97:

Davy Jones will be doing a thirty-minute set with his backup band as
part of his convention appearance.
The Third National Band (Nesmith covers) is now confirmed.
IF for any reason The Monkees concert at the Universal
Amphitheater is postponed, the convention will continue as planned,
September 12-14, with the scheduled guests.
The convention hotline # is (818) 309-9778. That’s Manchester
Cowboy Productions. If you get the answering machine and need to
talk to a real live person, try calling back later, as they are not able
to return long distance phone calls at this time.

From: monkeebiz@prodigy.com ( MAGGIE MCMANUS)

All the phones and e-mails were ringing when the Nick-At-Nite channel
began showing Green Acres in the Monkee-Monday slot.

I spoke to a publicist at Nick at Nite on Monday morning. She says the
final Monkees Monday was August 4. Yes, it was supposed to go through
August 25, but she said it was no biggie, it would’ve only been another two
weeks anyway because of the August 18 preemption for the Flip Wilson special.

Nick at Nite’s story is that “The Monkees” wasn’t doing well in the
ratings. The publicist said it performed the worst ratings-wise of all the
five Summer Block Party nights. (Please. How much difference can there
be, like .0001% or something??? Sheesh.)

She did tell me which one got the best ratings but asked me not to divulge
that info. (I won’t say, because I don’t want that info turning up in
people’s letters to Nick at Nite! ) But she did say that the Monkees’
show performed really well for Nickelodeon in the ’80s. Of course, she’s
forgotten that MTV MADE it a hit first, so she went on and on theorizing
that it was a better fit with the programming they had then because they
had “Laugh-In” then and it and the Monkees were both kind of psychedelic shows.

She went on to say that the Monkees doesn’t really fit with the other shows
on Block Party Summer…they’re all family sitcoms “with real stories”, she
said! Anyway, apparently the audience that has the nostalgia for
the family sitcoms doesn’t enjoy the Monkees. I tried to tell her that the
Monkees has a completely separate audience and I tried to tell her what an
increase we’ve seen in new Monkees fans on the ‘net and at the shows and
all since the show’s been on the air. (If the Monkees stayed on the air
this fall, Nick would undoubtedly see an increase in ratings as teens who
have discovered the show this summer return to school in September and
encourage their friends to check out “The Monkees”.)

At that, she did rethink and say that it was possible that the Monkees were
losing ratings on Monday nights because of other networks programming
against it; for example, she mentioned that VH-1 had Monday night movies.
But that’s it. Nickelodeon has no plans to add the Monkees to their fall
schedule in any form.

You can write to this address to air your complaints:

Nick at Nite Viewer Services
1515 Broadway, 37th floor
New York, New York, 10036

You can also call 212-258-7500 and ask for viewer services and speak to a
viewer services representative or leave a message on their answering
machine, but I suggest writing a letter. TV networks know that writing a
letter takes the most time and effort of all means of communication, so
letters impress them more.

Micky Dolenz – Love Bug Correction:

I saw your alert from Teresa about the “Love Bug” remake and I got
right on the phone to my contact at Disney Channel. He connected me with
the Listings person, and she consulted the guy in charge of Scheduling, and
they all say that “The Love Bug” is NOT on the schedule thru the end of
1997. They wanted to know where Teresa got this from. They did say they
intend to rerun the original film, but not the remake.

We did it!

According to the August 16 issue of Billboard, the Making of Justus
video has made the Top Music Videos list, debuting at number 40.

For those of you who have yet to buy your copy, run out and buy it, so
that it can stay on the list, and maybe even move up the charts.

This really gives the guys some credibility with regards to the new
album and the tour, so keep it up!

The Monkees are scheduled to perform live on NBC’s “Today” on Friday
morning, August 22, weather permitting. The “Today” show’s live musical
segments are staged outdoors on the plaza at 30 Rockefeller Center (NY,
NY), so rain would cancel the event.
If you are in the NY area and wish to attend, we’ve been told that people
start arriving at the outdoor stage around 5 or 5:30 a.m. Friday morning,
and the crowd can get as large as 5000! The musical segment is at
8:30….there’s a short interview at the stage, and then they’ll do 3
songs, 4 if the crowd is loud. As for getting on camera, we’ve been told,
“Signs help a lot, especially signs that mention Matt or Katie.” Looking
weird won’t get you on camera, the “Today” folks tell us; mostly the
camerafolk look for “normal everyday people with cute signs”.

Brandon Tartikoff Dies at 48 – Brandon Tartikoff, the programming whiz who transformed NBC into a television powerhouse, died Wednesday after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 48.

A spokeswoman at UCLA Medical Center said Tartikoff died of complications resulting from treatment for Hodgkins disease, a cancer of the lymph nodes.

Tartikoff developed NBC into the top-rated network in the 1980s with innovative shows such as “Hill Street Blues,” “Cheers,” “L.A. Law” and “Family Ties.” From 1991 to 1992, Tartikoff was chairman of Paramount Pictures. During his time there the studio released hit movies such as “Wayne’s World” and “Patriot Games.”

Brandon Tartikoff was known to Monkees fans for bringing Michael Nesmith back to network television with “Michael Nesmith in Television Parts.” The series had come from Tartikoff’s admiration of the video “Michael Nesmith in Elephant Parts” and wanted to bring it to television. In 1985, the NBC network aired 8 episodes with the final three episodes shown in a 90 minute block on Saturday night. All of the episodes brought in low ratings but Brandon felt that it would find an audience eventually.

He continued to be a supporter of Michael’s as well as The Monkees as he was in the audience for the Greek Theater reunion concert of 1986 and the Billboard Live reunion concert from 1996. After the failure of Michael’s video magazine Overview in 1987, Tartikoff offered to air it in a prime spot on the NBC schedule, but was turned down by Michael. Their professional releationship did not end there. The two financed the films “Square Dance” and “Tapeheads.” He was influential in getting the public television show “The Stephen Banks Show” on the air which featured a cameo by Peter Tork in one episode.

Most recently Tartikoff was working on several projects including the Monkees feature film. At Billboard Live, Tartikoff was asked by MBF if a Monkee movie would ever be made, he replied, “Yes, even if we have to pay for it ourselves.” Right now it is too early to tell if this has spelled the end of the movie as there are possibly other executives in charge of the project as well.

Hi Everyone,
Davy may be the first Monkee to break back into MTV! He just
completed a video shoot with the band Sorethumb for the song I WANT TO BE
YOUR DAVY JONES. VH1 has already taped an interview with Davy and
Sorethumb for an upcoming feature on teen idols.
Sorethumb has posted some GREAT behind the scenes pictures of
the shoot. One set is a total copy of the rainbow striped set that we
have all come to know and love from the Monkees show. To see the pictures,

I just read that The Hellecasters will be performing at Billboard Live on
September 19th of this year. It is possible that Mr. Nesmith could make an
appearance at this show. After all, he has toured with The Hellecasters in
the past and is, from what I understand, friendly with that group. Also
Billboard Live was the site of his appearance with the other Monkees many
months back.

Anybody with any more info/thoughts?
