Special Guest Judith Supple Sayre writes about her visit to the Davy Jones Exhibit at the Beavertown Historical Society Museum in Beavertown, Pennsylvania.

Our Trip To Beavertown – My husband Steve and I took a quick trip (5 hours from Ohio) to Beavertown, PA over the weekend (April 25 & 26) to “The Davy Jones Exhibit” presented by The Beavertown historical Society. The Historical Society opened exhibit on selected Sundays during March 8 & 22, April 12 & 26, and May 3 & 17, as well as by appointment and for a few hours on Memorial Day. The museum is located at 111 Walnut St., Beavertown, PA, inside the Beavertown Borough Building. I had heard about this exhibit, and I knew that both Fred Velez and Chris Pick, dear friends of mine, were planning to be there on April 26, so I thought it I’d try to be there that day too, since it would be a good opportunity to see them again, as well as the exhibit, and I thought that my input might be of some help. After all, I was the President of “The Friends Of David Jones Fan Club” (from 1979 – 1984) and was the Secretary of “The Micky Dolenz Stargazer Club” for a few years before that. [*The exhibit included many personal items from the collection of musician Chris Pick from the time that he worked with Davy Jones during meet and greets.]

My husband Steve and I spent the night at a local bed & breakfast the night before the event. On the Sunday after breakfast, and before all the exhibit started in the afternoon, Steve and I had some time to see Davy’s house. The current owner came out, waiting for someone else to arrive, but he talked to us for a while, and even took some photos for us! Then we visited the War Memorial and Rose Garden, which is beautiful. We took photos and looked for Davy’s bricks on the walkway. I found them and cried when I saw them. One says, “Remembering Our Manchester Cowboy” and the other says, “In Memory Of David T. Jones 1945-2012”. I showed Steve where Davy’s church used to be before it burned down in October 2016 and told him how Davy planned to have a Monkee Museum there. The whole thing was a very moving experience.

Fred and I had talked on the phone, and he told me that he unfortunately couldn’t make it after all due to car trouble. I was so sorry that I wouldn’t be able to see him. Fred was to be their “guest speaker”. So, I kind of became the “guest speaker” at that point instead. Chis was planning on singing and playing Davy and Monkee songs there. So, I came up with an idea. I told Fred I would call him while the exhibit was going on, and he could talk to everyone using my phone, and Chris’s microphone, and he could tell some of his Davy/Monkee stories, That worked out very well. Fred told his story about going to Davy’s house, and helping him pick out photos, etc., for the “Mutant Monkees” book.

When Chris took a break from singing, I went up to the microphone and read my story about my trip to England in 1978 to see Davy at Alexandra Palace, and about his children’s 45 record “Hey Ra, Ra, Ra, Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse” for Mickey Mouse’s 50th Birthday. I read this story right out of Fred’s book, “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You 2” and talked about his books and how to get them. I brought along photo albums with a lot of photos with me and Davy, and my Fan Club newsletters, that people could look through. I also answered a lot of questions for fans like “how did you meet Davy?” and ” how did you do the Fan club?” and “what was he really like?” This whole experience brought back a lot of happy memories of Davy. It was a lot of fun meeting and talking with the fans. I also met Karen Burns who was very nice and gracious. Chris Pick did a wonderful job with the music, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, including me!
