7a Records latest Davy Jones release, ‘Music And Memories: The MGM Recordings’, compiles the solo singles Davy recorded for MGM Records shortly after the Monkees project folded, and are amongst the rarest of his commercial releases in the early 1970’s.
Coming soon after finishing his self-titled album with Bell Records, (including the single ‘Girl’ which is best known through his appearance on ‘The Brady Bunch’ and as the theme for the movie ‘Star Spangled Girl’), Davy also made appearances on several television shows including ‘Love American Style’, ‘Make Room For Granddaddy’, the rare 1972 TV special ‘Pop!’, as well as taking to the theatrical stage again in England and Los Angeles.
Davy Jones got signed to MGM Records in 1972 and recorded several singles which included the Gilbert O’Sullivan penned ‘Who Was It?’, Peter Skellern’s ‘You’re A Lady’, and the whimsically silly and somewhat naughty ‘Rubberene’. Davy’s version of ‘You’re A Lady’ was so popular in Japan that Davy recorded a special Japanese language version of the song. Davy has performed this song in his early 1980’s Japan concerts to the delight of the fans. (The live version combining the English and Japanese language can be found on the 7a Records release ‘Davy Jones Live In Japan’.)
Besides the MGM singles, 7a Records has also included on the cd Davy’s songs from the 1977 original cast album of Harry Nilsson’s ‘The Point’, the theatrical musical production which Davy co-starred with fellow Monkee Micky Dolenz in England. (On the song ‘Gotta Get Up’ Davy duets with Micky.) The remainder of the cd concludes with the Japanese language version of ‘You’re A Lady’ and the mono mixes of ‘Who Was It?’ and ‘Rubberene’.

This is not only the first time all of Davy’s MGM singles have been issued in a compilation since a 1981 Japanese album shared with the MGM singles of Micky Dolenz, but also the first time that they’ve been digitally available on cd, many of the tracks taken from the original master tapes. 7a Records have packaged the Red CD in a beautiful triple fold cover with pictures of Davy, plus a lovely booklet with many more photos, several taken by Nurit Wilde, and informative liner notes written by Joe Marchese of http://TheSecondDisc.com that covers this period of Davy’s career.
Coming on the heels of the Holiday season, 7a Records ‘Music And Memories: The MGM Recordings’ will make the perfect present for all Davy Jones and Monkees fans!
