The Monkees’ 50th-anniversary album — and first in a decade — called Good Times!, will be released on May 27th. The album’s lead single, “She Makes Me Laugh” — written by Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo — will drop on April 29th. In addition to a previously unissued Davy Jones track from the 1960’s, Mike Nesmith sings lead on three new songs, with Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, who still tour under the group’s name, having contributed to the entire project. The album features songs the group passed over back in the day from such heavyweights as Carole King & Gerry Goffin, Harry Nilsson, and Neil Diamond.

The main draw of the new album is the inclusion on newly written songs by such “modern” songwriters as Cuomo, Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, XTC’s Andy Partridge, and Fountains Of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger — who also serves as the album’s producer.

Micky Dolenz told us that Good Times! came to life after the group’s longtime archivist found gold while rummaging through the band’s vast collection of studio tapes: “Andrew Sandoval, he’s always digging around in the vaults, and he came upon 50 unfinished tracks. Some with vocals, some without, some just mono, some just multi-track. Stuff that we had just never got around to doin’ — it wasn’t that it wasn’t any good; they were recording and producing so much material in those first couple of years for the TV show, for other albums that were gonna be coming along. Mike (Nesmith) and Peter (Tork) went their separate ways, Davy (Jones) and I did, I think one last album.”
