Hi Monkees-fans,

My recent update about the “Here They Come” CD from AUstralian turns out
to be nothing more than the Greatest Hits CD that came out from Warner in
the UK in 1997. It’s the same CD, nothing different 🙁

Hello! I just wanted to let you all know that The Monkees are mentioned
in a book titled “Cult TV: The Comedies” (sorry, I don’t recall the
name of the author) – I came across this book while at Borders. There
are two pages about their tv series and a b/w photo of The Monkees.

Love & Peace,
Joy

This short blurb about Davy appeared in yesterday’s (NOV 2) Chicago Tribune
page 2 Inc. column:

A guy’s gotta eat:

Ex-Monkee Davy Jones just signed to be a “jingle elf” in Chicago’s upcoming,
(Marshall) Field’s-sponsored Christmas parade. His job: dispensing
random acts of kindness. Not exactly the bright lights he once enjoyed, but
it’s still show biz.

On Sunday (01Nov98) I was flipping channels and came across a show called
Muppets Tonight on the Family channel. They were doing a Lolapalooza take
off and the first act they introduced was called the Benedictine Monks. 4
puppets all done up in brown robes take the stage. The Monks then throw the
robes aside to reveal tonsured caricatures of Davy, Micky, Mike (complete
with hat) and Peter and they proceed to sing Hey Hey We’re the Monk(ee)s.
The guest stars on the show were Penn and Teller so watch for the reruns.
Thought it was cute! :o)

I was watching TBS a few minutes ago, and it looks like Micky is going to
appear on the “Movie Lounge” on Saturday. The movie is “Urban Cowboy” and
different guests will be making appearances. Micky was listed and they showed
him as well. If you want to see it, Movie Lounge starts at 10:10 PM EST on
TBS.

I was watching CNN’s ShowBiz Today 11/6/98 and they were talking about new
releases on Video and DVD and they talked about Elephant Parts;

{Voice Over Scene’s from Elephant Parts}
Freed from the Monkee cage, Mike Nesmith turned Video Mogul in the 70’s
creating the first really significant made-for-video release Elephant Parts.
Here on DVD the scene’s really show, but so the enormous energy that was
invested in this little project and Nesmith turns out to be a considerably
more talented musician that those Monkee albums would have you think.

From November 1998 Discoveries Magazine Page 54:

Artist Biographies

Total Control – The Michael Nesmith Story
by Randi L. Massingill
FLEXquarters, softcover $18.95

Michael Nesmith has spent the better part of the past few decades trying to convince fans of the Monkees that he’s had a rather productive and successful life since. Those fans would do well to read this bio, the greater percentage of which is taken up with Nesmith’s post-Monkees solo years and his pioneering work in video and multi-media. It’s a painstakingly detailed account of the life and work of this creative musician and businessman, with just the right balance of fact, trivia and anecdote, thankfully free of the sort of gushing that has often accompanied Monkees-related books. Also includes a fabulously comprehensive discography. (1125 W Baseline #2F, Mesa AZ 85210)

Goldstar Entertainment Acquires ‘Summer of Love Tour…

I just received this… Sounds like good news on an otherwise bleak, rainy
November day!

From: AOLNews@aol.com

Goldstar Entertainment Acquires ‘Summer of Love Tour ’99’ Plans First Multi-
Media Classic Rock & Roll National Tour

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ — Goldstar Entertainment
Media, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: GENT) announced today that it had acquired
exclusive rights to the “SUMMER OF LOVE TOUR ’99” which will launch nationally
in May, 1999 for a five-month, sixty-date tour. The tour will feature
“Classic Rock” musicians from over ten major bands, including Iron Butterfly,
Jefferson Airplane, The Monkees, Young Rascals, and the Spencer Davis Group,
and will be the first concert tour in history to incorporate all aspects of
multi-media, including 3-D Vision, live Internet video and audio streaming, a
Cable TV Pay-Per-View event, and a cross promoted Direct Response TV (DRTV)
merchandising campaign.

The Concert Tour/DRTV Campaign will combine the promotional value of a high-
profile concert event with major artists using television commercials in that
market offering a music and memorabilia package by those artists. The tour
will also utilize cross-promotions with radio stations and other media
outlets, as well as national retail chains, to provide additional exposure.

Tour dates will be announced in mid-December. In addition, the company is
presently finalizing agreements with national media companies as joint venture
partners for the Pay-Per-View event and DRTV campaign. Live internet video
streaming of certain concert tour events, including exclusive backstage
footage, will be provided on the Company’s own web site www.real-rock.com.

According to Peter and Micky, it’s neither of them.
And Davy will be on the Teen Idols tour.

The agent handling the Summer of Love tour is home with the flu, so I
haven’t been able to get an answer at that end, despite repeated calls.

Note that the press release said: “The tour will feature ‘Classic Rock’
MUSICIANS from over ten major bands, including…The Monkees…” Could
just be someone who’s played with them at some point?

I woke up this morning and the first thing I saw was Micky! He was on a
program called “Haven” and Joy Filbin was interviewing him IN HIS HOUSE!! They
were talking about Circus Boy and his directing career, etc. They showed some
artwork on the walls and took you into his bedroom to show the Indian headrest
that he wore at the Monterey Pop Fest. I didn’t catch the whole thing, but
click tv says it will be on again tomorrow (Sunday) at 5:00am on CBS. It was
awesome, set your alarms (or VCRs)!

Hi everyone!

I was researching for a paper at the school library on the internet, and
I came across a website that mentions the Monkees. The URL is
http://www.allmusic.com and the site is called All Music Guide. You have
to type in “The Monkees” It also has http://www.allmovie.com and that
is all Movie Guide. If you click on an indiviual Monkee name, they give
you a page on him with a biography(at all music). When I was at the all
movie guide, they even listed Micky’s father. Yes, they even have a
page on the members(seperate) at all movie guide that lists their tv
shows/movies. Both are good pages. Check ’em out!

For those of you who MUST have everything:

I uncovered a new bootleg yesterday at a local CD shop.

“Michael Nesmith: And the Live Stuff Stuff Keeps Comin'”
Release: Monkeyshines 002
This CD is of good quality and sound slike it was taken from the sound
board or from VERY close to the stage. Recorded LIVE at the Britt
Festival, Jacksonville, OR on 6/19/92

Tracks:
Two Different Roads
Papa Gene’s Blues
Propiniquity
Some of Shelly’s(sic) Blues
Joanne
Tomorrow adn Me
The Upside of Goodbye
Harmony Constant
Silver Moon
Yellow Butterfly
Moon Over the Rio Grande
Juliana
Laugh Kills Lonesome
I Am Not That
Rising Love

And lots of good Nez Chatter. He’s actually talking to the audience
about the songs and it appears that this concert was done on an “on”
night for Nez and the band (including John Hobbs and Red Rhodes. The
live version of Tomorrow and Me is excellent.

If you can find it, it is worth a listen, but I would never reccommend
buying it because it is a bootleg and Nez deosn’t get th money.

Thanks.

I found another article on World Book Online that compares the Monkees to
the Spice Girls. Unfortunately, they insulted the Monkee’s musical talent. 🙁

“Girl power.” Among the most successful yet controversial sensations of 1997
were the Spice Girls, a British quintet whose debut album, Spice, sold more
than 14 million copies following its release in February 1997. The group
released their second album, Spiceworld, late in 1997. Detractors claimed
that the popularity of the singers, most of whom were in their 20’s, owed
more to marketing than music and that the girls, who had nicknames such as Baby
Spice and Posh Spice, had been cast for their roles based more on looks than
on talent. Critics compared the group to the 1960’s band the Monkees, who
also offered fans more in appearance than musical talent. Although the Spice
Girls were not taken seriously by most older listeners, younger listeners,
especially young girls, rallied to the group’s prowoman “girl power” slogan.

I was browsing World Book Online when I came upon an article about popular
music of 1966. This is what it said about the Monkees:

Rock. Though the Beatles and a few other British groups retained their
popularity with the American public, there was a noticeable trend toward
domestic rock units. One, the Monkees, was created specially as the subject
of a television series and was simultaneously launched on records. The
Monkees came from Hollywood, Calif., the point of origin of several other
top groups such as Paul Revere and the Raiders, and Gary Lewis and the
Playboys.

I just put on the Critic on Comedy Central (not my usual choice but
nothin else is on), and this Australian gal that Jay is going with is
telling him all the men she’s slept with and they do a little time jump
then she says

“Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork”

ULTRA GROOVEY! I didn’t hear Davy or Mike’s name tho. Just the
CUTE one and the sweet one!

I dunno if it’ll be on again — it’s the 2:30 A (central) airing (Sun
morning that is). I don’t know when this show is on.

show with David. It is set up for Sunday Dec 19th. I assume the same
time 8:00 PM EST – 9:00 PM EST. The number to call in is 800-611-KOOL.
Remember the caller is immediately put on the air so be prepared to say
hello to David!

Peace and love,

Subject: Peter Tork Radio Interview

Roseann Flickenger, the Keeper of the Peter Tork Official Website,
has graciously posted the radio interview that aired October 23rd
on KEZY – FM 95.9 in Orange County, Calif. It features Peter torking
about the SSB show, the 7th heaven episode, and SSB in general.

Background: Peter called me at work, I was secluded upstairs
in a secret room. We were both in a conference call with the radio
station, who messed up and gave Peter and I the wrong number
at first. The phone call was actually on the 22nd, and they edited
a wonderful 18 minute interview with Peter down to a little over
3 minutes, which aired the next morning at 8:06 AM PST. I taped
it at home, then digitized it with a soundblaster. This I converted
into a RealAudio file, and e-mailed it to Zan (Roseann) with some
pics courtesy of Nadine Saunders, who was at the show, with camera.

Yes, the other voice you hear is me. I get a bit of ribbing for having
the name David Jones, but not too bad. How many people get to
be on the radio with Peter? Definately a SuperDay for me.

Thanks Roseann and Nadine for their contributions, and for
immortalizing me on the Peter Tork website!

Keep your eyes peeled to the Alert list for the SSB movie! I’ve
seen parts of it already, it is stunning! (well, heck, I’m in it, so
my opinion is moot). Jeannette, who is a RL Television Editor,
is working hard to complete it, hopefully in time for Christmas.

Thanks for letting me brag a little (OK, a lot)

NEWS FROM THE UK

In the December issue of MOJO there is a full page (154) on Peter leaving
the Monkees. The interview was conducted by Andrew Vaughn.

At the end Peter says, “Right now I have a band playing Chicago blues and
swing; I’m also doing a solo album. ”

“I’m still going to television auditions. Sometimes I get a part, sometimes
I don’t.”

“I’ve just finished a show called 7th Heaven.”

“The Monkees may not get in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we weren’t a
great group…but as far as music and television goes we were the best.”

Best wishes

Great news for Micky fans, there’s a new Micky video avaiable. Last
summer Micky got the chance to finally act with his daughter Ami.
Together they filmed a pilot for a show entitled “Who’s for Dinner?”
Additionally Micky directed the pilot and it was produced by Samantha,
his first wife. The format for the show was later changed so this pilot
will never be aired, but Samantha decided it would be a shame if fans
never got to see it, so she decided to offer it herself.

To obtain the pilot send a check or money order for $19.95 plus $3.00 for
postage to:
Flower Power Productions
3870 La Sierra Ave. #144
Riverside, CA 92505

Allow 2 weeks for delivery.

Hi everyone!
I was going through my mother’s people magazine for the week of
November 30th, and in the crossword it says:
6 Down:
“This Just Doesn’t____to Be My Day” by the Monkees

The answer is “Seem”

Hey guys!

I was looking around the Video Movie Guide book for some ideas on my
next story, and I found that the author had reviewed Head. I thought
that was pretty cool! It reads:

Head (1968) Three Stars: They get the funniest looks from everyone they
meet. And it’s no wonder. This film is truly bizarre. The Monkees were
hurtled to fame in the aftershock of the Beatles’ Success. Their
ingratiating series was acused of imitating A Hard Day’s Night, but
their innovative feature-film debut, Head, was ahead of its time. A
free-form product of the pshchedelic era.

86m. Dir: Robert Rafelson. Cast: Micky Dolenz, David Jones, Mike
Nesmith, Peter Tork, Teri Garr, Vito Scotti, Timothy Carey, Logan
Ramsey.

It was just interesting to read @:o)

The Monkees Home Page is reviewed in the December issue of Discoveries
Magazine, in Jeff Tamarkins “Where Thw Interaction Is” column. A very
favorable review, it reads as follows:

The Monkees Home Page (http://www.flexquarters.com/monkees.htm)

“They remain immensely popular today, and there are dozens of sites
devoted to the Monkees, but this is the best one we’ve seen yet. A “New
Stuff” section keeps fans up to date on activities involving the
foursome. There are sections for each individual member, links galore,
photos, then and now areas, chats, the TV show, the music, the works.
Very nicely done.”
