Many Monkees fans who were around for the guys’ 1980s reunion tours will
remember Jennifer McLeod—she was the designer of the stage wardrobe for
the Monkees’ 1987-1989 tours, she sold her fabric art t-shirts through
Monkees fan clubs, and she was Peter’s girlfriend. Jennifer is still in
New York City and still in the decorative arts business, and she’ll be
selling some of her crafts at the outdoor holiday market in Union Square in
New York City, 11-8 weekdays, 11-7 weekends, now through Christmas. She
expects to be on hand all day Saturdays and part-time the rest of the
days….if you remember Jennifer from the Monkees’ 1980s tours, stop by and
say hello!!!

TV Guide’s latest Cheers and Jeers section, page 12 (dated December 5 – 11) mentions Cheers for a recent episode of 7th Heaven (November 16) that starred Peter Tork of the Monkees. This is what it said:

Cheers to harmonic convergences. A recent episode of 7th Heaven (November 16) really summoned up the rock of ages. Playing the one-time band mates of Reverend Camden (Stephen Collins) were Keith Allison of Paul Revere and the Raiders; David Eisley, who once toured with Foreigner and Deep Purple; and Peter Tork of the Monkees. There’s no rust on these rock veterans, judging by their jam session on Creams’s “Sunshine of Your Love.”

I do hope we hear from you over the holidays. We’ll shipping up ’till

One last thing to serious collectors: We have two original “Infinite Rider

As the Teen Idols Tour comes to my town tomorrow night, my local newspaper has
a really interesting article about Davy. The correspondent interviewed him
over the phone and she includes references about his post-Monkee life. Thought
I would pass it along. You can see it at:

Some of you may know that Jim Frawley, who directed many (most?) episodes
of ‘The Monkees’ is now the Co-Executive Producer and the primary
director of Michael Madsen’s new ABC Thursday night series, ‘Vengeance
Unlimited’.

Rob Draper, Cinematographer for the series, has a behind-the-scenes
website for ‘ VU’, and has recently devoted a page to Mr Frawley’s prior
work on ‘The Muppet Movie’, and with the Monkees, among other things.
There is a b/w shot of him with the guys that I don’t recall seeing
before. The URL for the Frawley Page is:

Hey there;
On the Kenneth Branagh Compendium web page, I noticed Micky was on the list of
those scheduled to attend the benefit premiere of Branagh’s “Theory of Flight”
last night in Westwood, CA. The premiere was a benefit for an organization
for ALS sufferers, one of whom is portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter in the
film.
Micky’s name was misspelled “Mickey,” but the thought of my two favorite guys
in the whole world of entertainment in one place drives me crazy! I hope it
is mentioned on ET tonight.

On tonight’s (12/15) edition of Entertainment Tonight during the
segment on the premiere of some movie (I didn’t notice which one)
Micky was shown quickly. Only about three seconds but it was a nice
close-up — he was in black (as usual) and wearing his glasses. I
don’t know if ET repeats at all but if it does — keep an eye out! It
goes by fast but it’s undeniably him!

The latest issue of Goldmine (1/1/99) has an article titled “25 Essential
Rock ‘n’ Roll DVD’s” They have three of Monkee importance. They have
three DVD’s pictured, they are Elephant Parts, Head, and A Hard Day’s
Night. Here are the Monkee reviews:

6. Elephant Parts (DVD International). Michael Nesmith won the first-ever
Grammy Award for video with this off-kilter and frequently funny collection
of comedy bits, intersed with videos for Nesmith songs like “Rio” and
“Crusin,” (the latter featuring a then-unknown Hulk Hogan in the role of
Sunset Sam). The DVD release- billed as the “17 1/2th Anniversary
Edition”- adds wacky, non sequiter commentary from Nesmith himself, and
it’s worth the price of admission right there.

8. Head (Rhino). The Monkees’ 1968 feature film is a wickedly subversive
deconstruction of the group’s own “manufactured image, with no philosophy.”
It’s acquired a certain cache of cool over the years, in part because of
some of the people involved in making it (particulary Jack Nicholson and
Frank Zappa). The film is unrelentingly vicious in its implicit
condemnation of the crass starmaking machinery that created the Monkees,
yet it’s ultimately the group’s crowning creative achievement. This
edition includes several theatrical trailers- but why no widescreen option?

13. The Monkees: Our Favorite Episodes (Rhino). So far, this is the only
representation of the Monkees’ TV show on DVD, a collection of four
episodes (one chosen by each member of the group).

A compelling literary career may be just beginning

‘The Long Sandy Hair of
Neftoon Zamora’
by Michael Nesmith

St. Martin’s Press, $24.95

Review by L.D. Meagher

Web posted on: December 21, 1998 01:10:22 p.m. ET

(CNN) — Somewhere between Amarillo and Apache Pass, there’s a place
for the world-weary to find truth, beauty and the blues. It exists in, and on,
the legends that are literally older than the hills of New Mexico. Once you’ve
found it, you understand two things. First, your life will never be the same.
Second, you can never go back.

Michael Nesmith spends part of his life among the sere and sorrel of New
Mexico. He has absorbed the mystery and mysticism of the landscape, and
infused it into his fist novel “The Long Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora”. Yes,
it’s that Michael Nesmith — the Monkee with the hat, the music video
pioneer, the screenwriter and movie producer. Now he’s a novelist, and, it
turns out, a pretty good one.

He has written a chronicle of the quest for self-awareness, as seen through
the eyes of an admittedly semi-autobiographical character named Nez.
Driven by a mysterious cassette tape filled with amazing blues music, he
travels to New Mexico in search of the composer. He has only a name to go
on: Neftoon Zamora. At a diner on the edge of the desert, he meets Neffie,
a remarkable woman who may or may not be the object of his search.

Like the legendary Zamora, Neffie has long sandy hair, an unusual feature in
a land where raven black tresses are the hereditary norm. But is Neffie really
Neftoon, as the owner of the diner claims? She insists she is not, and indeed
some of the legends depict Zamora as a man. Not that she believes all the
legends. She tells Nez she’s simply paid to spin the tall tales, some of which
date back to the days of the pueblo builders, others she weaves on the spot
out of whole cloth.

Then there’s the music, the haunting blues that drew Nez to New Mexico in
the first place. The jukebox at the diner is filled with Neftoon Zamora songs.

“When I pushed the button next to the song ‘You Got to Trust the Pilot,’ the
Seeburg lit up, clicked, swallowed the command somewhere in its
electronics, and the song came over the speakers in the diner as well as from
the big, mother-ship jukebox standing in the corner. An orchestra, mostly
synthetic, began lush sweeps and someone who sounded like William
Shatner began a half-sung, half-spoken recitation of the Zamora tune. I
looked at the song list in front of me. It was William Shatner, sounding like
he did on his recording of ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.'”

The truth of Neftoon Zamora proves to be as elusive as the true voice of the
songwriter. His search for Nez to a village carved into the side of a valley. It
also draws him, inevitably, into the arms of Neffie. She opens the door that
leads to her world, a world where time and space and hunger don’t mean the
same things they mean to the world outside. In his descriptions of the
unworldly place his protagonist finds himself, Nesmith echoes the styles of
two writers he calls “touchstones”-Gabriel Garcia-Marquez and Lewis
Carroll. He constructs a narrative that’s part magical realism, part “The Red
Queen’s Race.”

“I was uncomfortable with this. Happy, smiling, beautiful people on their way
to a dance in a magical canyon city beneath the starry moonlit sky of New
Mexico, away from the world, in a world of their own. But there it was. And
I was part of it. Of course, I was up to my eyeballs in love, so the glow over
everything could have made a root canal seem attractive.”

Nez and Neffie can’t stay in this idyllic place forever, of course. When they
emerge from it, Nesmith sets them on the road to much more mundane
adventurers. Even so, they meet unusual people (like the ruthless billionaire
child-porn trafficker) and see unusual things (like the palatial service station
standing all alone on a desert road). But their interactions with the outside
world are not nearly as interesting nor as much fun as their inner
explorations.

“The Long Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora” is an impressively unexpected
novel. It is not the sort of thing a celebrity would toss off in the hope of
cashing in on a famous name. Instead, it serves notice that a compelling
literary career may be just beginning. Michael Nesmith, hats off.

L.D. Meagher is a senior writer at CNN Headline News. He has worked in
broadcasting for nearly 30 years.

Brad,

I just got a phone call from Ken Wilkinson who asked me to let fans know
that Lauire Haley, who was on the 80’s tours and is a friend of David’s,
was just released from the hospital after having surgery on a brain
tumor. He is recovering but is very down and Ken would like fans to send
Laurie cards and letters to let him know they are thinking of him. His
address is:

Would you send this out on your Monkee alerts list please.
Thanks for your help!
