had this review:

Cowritten by actor Jack Nicholson and Monkees’s creator Bob
Rafelson, “Head” is truly one of the most subversive films ever
made, as it tracks the famous 1960’s created for TV rock band The
Monkees (Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith)
and while it appears to be a wild eye candy acid trip non-sequitor–
the film takes on rock personas, advertising, and the “black box” of
TV in which the actors/musicians were virtually entombed. It’s both
a zany as the Monkees’ TV show and incredibly moving. Perhaps one
of the greatest films ever made on rock stardom. Absolutely
stunning musical sequences against an amazing soundtrack, which
includes the much-lauded Goffin-King composition “The Porpoise
Song”. Includes great cameos by Annette, Frank Zappa, “Oh Mickey”
Toni Basi, Dennis Hopper and Nicholson himself.

Hi, Brad,

As you know I run the BAND 6 fan club here in Dallas. Most of my
members are out of town, state or country. Could you post this to
the alert list to see if any local fans would be interested in
helping out?

Laura,
Thanks for the quick response! Here’s a little more information
about our
pledge drives…

Our pledge drives generate the largest percentage of revenue for our
station, and we honestly could not succeed in these ventures without
the help of our volunteers. We have several shifts available
throughout the entire length of our TV drives, with those shifts
being 11:30am-4pm, 3:30pm-7pm, and 6:30pm-11:00pm (Monday-Friday),
and 8am-12noon, 11:30am-4pm, 3:30pm-7pm, and 6:30pm-11:00pm
(Saturday & Sunday).

During each shift, we seek the help of volunteers to answer in-
coming phone calls from viewers who are calling in to make a pledge
(donation) to the station. It’s pretty simple, just reading the
questions from a pledge form, and filling in the blanks.

The shift that I am asking you’ll to help with would be Wednesday,
August 13, 6:30pm-11pm. We would actually have dinner and training
from 6pm-7pm, and head back to the studio after that’s finished,
(approximately 7pm).

During the breaks in the show(s), our camera crew will shoot a
volunteer thank-you spot of all the volunteers from your group, with
a voice-over produced by KERA thanking your group for volunteering.
We also encourage groups to wear t-shirts with their name and/or
logos for better visibility.

The programming that evening will feature Broadways Lost Treasures
and Hey, Hey We’re the Monkees–which is a documentary tracing the
start and ultimate rise to stardom for the Monkees.

We would love for you and more of your “Monkee Friends” to help
out. Just let me know if how many more volunteers you will have,
and I will take care of the rest on this end as far as getting your
thank-you spot produced.

I think that’s it. Please let me know if you have any more
questions, or if I can be of help to you in any way.

Talk to you soon,

Shawn

Thank you so much for writing! I am very excited to hear you are
doing a program on The Monkees. What program is it? This is the
first I have heard of it. You can definitely count on me to be
there. Though the club is here locally, we have members all over the
nation and even the world. There aren’t very members actually
locally. I will definitely be able to get some people though.
Anyway, give me the details, and I’ll start digging up some people.

Keep Monkeeing Around,

Hi Laura,
I got your e-mail address through a search for “Monkees Fan Clubs”
in Dallas, TX. My name is Shawn Mahr and I manage the Volunteer
Services Program at KERA 13/KERA 90.1/KERA 2 (the public
broadcasting television and radio stations in North Texas).

I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen our pledge drives on television or
not, but if you have, then I’m sure you’ve noticed the volunteers in
the background answering the phones and taking pledges from viewers
calling in to make a pledge KERA. On a good day, I am usually able
to coordinate a volunteer group that matches the programming that we
air during that time frame; other times we get different
organizations and companies who come down to volunteer as a way of
team-building or added recognition for their business/organization.
Here’s where I have an great opportunity for you…

On Wednesday, August 13, we will be airing a special on the Monkees
and I thought it would be neat to have the local fan club answer
phones in our studio that evening. The shift is from 7pm-11pm, but
we also provide a dinner and training from 6pm-7pm.

Do you think your group would be interested in volunteering that
evening? Our studio holds 30 volunteers, but if you have less than
that, we could fill in the slots with some of our individual
volunteers.

Please let me know if you are interested. Once I hear from you, I
can go over all the pertinent details, and answer any questions that
you may have.

You can reach me at 214-740-5490, or my e-mail address is
smahr@kera.org

Thanks for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Shawn L Mahr
Manager, Volunteer Services
