New Monkees Hit Set Due In April, TV Show DVD Set Coming In May

A new Monkees collection, The Best Of The Monkees, will be released
on April 29th by Rhino Records, and include a bonus karaoke disc.
Additionally, the first DVD release of the group’s 1960s TV show
episodes will hit stores on May 13th.

The new set will feature 25 tracks, including the band’s three
Number One hits–“Last Train To Clarksville,” “I’m A Believer,”
and “Daydream Believer”–along with other favorites like “She”
and “Mary, Mary.” The liner notes features comments by original band
member Mike Nesmith.

The bonus karaoke disc in the package includes the actual backing
tracks to five of the group’s most popular records–“Pleasant Valley
Sunday,” “I’m A Believer,” “Daydream Believer,” “(Theme From) The
Monkees,” and “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone.” The disc can be
played on home karaoke machines and includes follow-along lyrics.

The DVD set of the group’s first year on television, The Monkees:
Season One, will follow in May, with The Monkees: Season Two
scheduled to be released later in 2003.

The Monkees were the first group that launched on TV, paving the way
for shows such as American Idol and Making The Band. Nesmith and
bandmates Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, and Peter Tork all met during
auditions for the program.

Ironically, the group’s hit songs were originally intended to be
just a secondary part of the show. Jones says that in the beginning,
no one talked about recording singles and albums, only the TV script.

“They were only demos that were recorded for the TV show to insert
into the spots where we had, you know, something that related to the
dialogue, the scene, the whole thing. I mean, I loved ‘Daydream
Believer’ and ‘I’m A Believer’ and ‘Pleasant Valley Sunday’
and ‘Last Train To Clarksville.'”
