The Nesmith reissue of “Tropical Campfire’s” on spinART records has been
out of print. My local record dealer called me up when he heard about it
(back in November or December) and asked me if I wanted one. I asked him
to go ahead and order it for me, but then he got back to me about two weeks
later and said that they cancelled his order because they put it out of
print. I’m not sure if ANY sold, but if they did.. it’s quite a collectors
item right now.

Also, run to your local bookstore and pick up the new May 2001 issue of
“Discoveries” magazine for record and cd collectors. There is a full page
article on Nesmith. He is listed on the front page with the following
headline “Michael Nesmith – No Respect?” The article is pretty good, some
of the info is a little off, but over all, it is well written. The picture
is of Nesmith from the cover of “The Newer Stuff”. There is also a nice
article on the Buffalo Springfield and other “pre-country-rockers”. Very
appropriate to have a Nesmith article following that one!

Peace & Love!

Just thought I’d let everyone know that Micky’s concert with Peter Noone
at the Leelanau Sands Casino in Suttons Bay, MI for June 8 has been
cancelled.

My friends and I were planning on attending, and when we heard rumors
about a Monkees concert in St. Louis for that date, we called the casino
and found out that it was true — Micky had backed out of the casino
show to perform with the Monkees instead.

I thought you’d all like to read the article from Friday’s Asbury Park Press,
so here it is:

PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY
Opening for Peter Tork a dream come true
by Kelly-Jane Cotter, music writer

Alicia Van Sant, a die-hard fan of the Monkees, could really go
bananas over her band’s gig this Sunday.
Van Sant and her cohorts in the Wag will open for the Shoe Suede
Blues, a side project of Monkee Peter Tork, at an early show on Sunday at the
Stone Pony, 913 Ocean Ave. in Asbury Park. Admission is $15 and show time is
7 p.m. The show is expected to end before 11 p.m., because the Pony is
hosting a late show, too, with the Juggling Suns. Admission is $5.
“As soon as I found out they were playing, I had to get it,” Van Sant
said, recalling how she lobbied the Pony for the warm-up slot. “When Kyle
(Brendle) from the Pony called and said we were going to be the only opening
band, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.”
Van Sant has already met the Monkees at concerts. “They’re very
accessible,” she said. But it’s bound to be a different experience sharing a
stage with one of the pop icons.
Coincidentally, the Monkees are on tour this summer and are scheduled
to perform July 13 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. Tickets and time
will be announced later.
The Port Monmouth, Middletown, home Van Sant shares with her
husband/bandmate Brian Ostering, who plays bass and writes songs for the Wag,
is a veritable jungle of Monkees recordings. Van Sant has a full collection
and can rattle off information about lesser-known songs by the ’60’s group.
“They got much darker in theme than ‘Last Train to Clarksville,'” Van
Sant said. “There’s a song called ‘Mommy and Daddy’ which talks about the
Kennendy assassination and drugs.”
The rest of the Wag- Dan Corboy of Middletown, guitarist, and Brian
Mowery of Garfield, drummer- might not have encyclopedic knowledge about the
Monkees, but all the musicians have been influenced by the sunny side of pop.
Pop music has received a lightweight reputation lately because of the
prominence of guy groups and baby divas. But the term applies to the best of
the Beatles as well as to Britney.
“To me, the positive side of pop music is the catchy melodies,” Van
Sant said. “And there are tons of harmonies. It’s something you can listen
to without it giving you a headache.”
The Wag’s logo- a cute, cartoon dog against a bright yellow
background- gives you a clue into the band’s sensibility. The Wag’s music is
sincere and fun, propelled by intelligent songwriting and buoyed by Van
Sant’s keyboards. Through their sheer enjoyment of sound, the musicians
remind you that it’s easy to be happy.
The Wag has self-released two CDs. The most recent is “Eighteen
Months.”
Tork’s Shoe Suede Blues is a blues band, but the band is expected to
play some Monkees hits, too.
The Wag won’t dare tackle the Monkees canon, but Van Sant confided
that the band will play one cleverly chosen cover: “Different Drum,” which
was a hit for Linda Ronstadt (and, in the ’90’s, for the Lemonheads) and was
written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees.
For more info on the show, call (732)502-0600 or go to
www.stoneponyonline.com. For info on the Wag, check out the band’s adorable
site, www.thewagband.com.

+++++ A couple of things, here- isn’t the PNC show on July 12, not 13?
Also, when I talked about “Mommy and Daddy”, I told her there were 2
versions, and the 2nd one talked about the Kennedy assassination… but
that’s OK. You all know that. Dan also writes songs for us, and while I
haven’t written a complete song yet, I’ve written lines here and there, some
complete verses, and I’ve helped to arrange a few songs. I don’t just sing
and play! 🙂 I also told her that Linda Ronstadt was in the Stone Poneys,
but she didn’t print that. That’s ok, it’s not the end of the world. Also,
I didn’t personally lobby to get the gig- Brian was the one doing the actual
calling to Kyle, but I did keep telling him to do that! We all wanted the
gig, and Brian knows Kyle better than the rest of us do, so he was the
perfect choice. That’s it, I guess! 🙂 I hope you enjoyed reading the
article! 🙂
Love, Alicia

Last night I went to an event called the Second Chance
Prom with Herman’s Hermits and MICKY DOLENZ! What a
show! I won a pair of tickets that included great
seats and backstage passes. Micky was the first to
perform. He went through most of the number ones and
said his usual jokes and even Coco sang a few songs.
Though there were rumors that Davy and Peter were
going to join him for this show, they never showed.
But seeing Micky was just as good. After his set, we
were allowed to go backstage to meet him and “Herman”.
It was all kind of rushed so they could have everyone
back in the ballroom for Peters set. The group of us
had tons of pictures taken and autographs signed and
pretty much had to get back to the prom. BUT- we had
heard Micky was going to be signing more in the lobby
before Peters set so we followed right behind and got
even more pics and autographs! What a night! The
face to face meeting may have been rushed but getting
to meet my all time favorite musician was worth it
all.
When Herman’s Hermits came out to perform, the place
went crazy. You could tell there were more fans there
for him- but there were a lot of Micky fans too. He
puts on an excellent show and plays to the crowd very
well. If you have never seen him in concert, make
plans. You will have a great time!
It was a very good night. Now I am counting down the
days to when I get to see the Monkees again in
Michigan. I went to the Merrillville show in March
and it was great. 2 Monkees shows, a Micky show and
meeting Micky all in 4 months. How lucky am I?? hehe

Papa Nez: A Loose Salute to the work of Michael Nesmith

If you like Michael Nesmith’s work, do yourself a favor and buy this CD.

In the hands of these Americana singers and groups, Michael’s music is
rediscovered and given new life. In particular, Buddy Woodward shines with
“You Told Me,” and I was very pleased with the laid-back sound of Frog
Holler’s version of “Different Drum.” I was pleased (and surprised) that
even such truly obscure tracks as “St. Matthew” are represented here; the
project spans from early Monkees’ cuts like “Papa Gene’s Blues” all the way
to “Magic” from “Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma.” If I found anything to
dislike, it was just that they could only fit 19 of Michael’s songs on
here, and two of them are songs Michael recorded but didn’t write (“Texas
Morning” and “Prairie Lullaby”).

I definitely recommend this CD to any and all Michael fans. It’s well
worth the listen!

There seems to be some confusion about the Pittsburgh Monkee concert. It is
listed as:

“June 30, IC Light Amphitheatre, Pittsburgh, PA, 412-232-6200”

I talked to someone at the IC Light Ampitheater and they said that
The Monkees were supposed to be there, but that it was changed. Now the
Monkees are supposed to be will be at the Allegheny County Fair. The number
for tickets is 412-232-1537

On Friday this article was in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Monkees and more animals at county fair
Friday, May 18, 2001
Scott Mervis, Post-Gazette Weekend Editor

The Allegheny County Fair will do its best this summer to make us
believers. And they’re bringing in the Monkees to help their cause.

After a 25-year hiatus, the Allegheny County Fair will return for a second
year, opening June 26 and running through July 1 at South Park.

Along with carnival rides, children’s activities, agricultural
competitions, arts and crafts and educational demonstrations, there will be
a wide mix of entertainment, from the Davy Jones and the boys to the Paul
Bunyan Lumberback Show.

The entertainment lineup features the Allegheny All-Star Band (June 26);
Chubby Checker (June 27); The Commodores (June 28); Air Supply (June 29);
the Monkees (June 30); and Blackhawk (July 1).

Appearing June 26 to 28 will be The Toyota Hollywood Stunt Show will
provide thrills in the first half of the week, with the lumberjacks riding
out the weekend.

Last year, Fair 2000 drew an estimated 50,000 people to the fairgrounds.
The new county fair board, now established as a nonprofit, is hoping to
get those numbers up to the 500,000 they drew in the heyday of 1960s and
early ’70s.

The fair is looking for commercial vendors, nonprofit exhibits and
participants for the community stage. They should call 412-355-0722. Those
wishing to volunteer should call 412-243-3247.

Further details are available at www.acfair.org.

The website run by David Fishof still has the IC Light Ampitheatre listed.

Hello everyone!

I just came from a really FUNNY musical called THE PENNIES. It’s like what
The Rutles were to The Beatles. It is playing at Brookdale Community
College in Lincroft, NJ(monmouth county) off exit 109 of the GSParkway. My
face hurts from smiling, I’m not exaggerating! If you wanna go and wanna be
surprised skip to the bottom where I include the address and times and dates.

The premise was that since the Monkees was so popular, CBS decided to rip
off the idea and cast for a show called The Pennies. The parallels are
unmistakable and histerical, though there are many differences too. For
example, the Micky-esque character, “Jeff”, was a child actor in “Cubby, The
Jungle Boy” and wasn’t a skinny guy. He got called “chubby, the jungle boy”
a lot and loved to do a bad James Cagney. The Mike-like guy’s name was Art
and he portrayed the only guy who had talent, and a powerful lawyer uncl, who
made sure that he got all the B-sides. He had major side burns and they kept
calling him “Hair”…he hated it but they wouldn’t change it…..he wished he
was bald……guess what happened 30 years later 🙂 The Peter-like guy was
“Glenn” and he was actually dumber than the character and always quite
stoned. The Davy-like character was “Eddy” and they found him doing off-off
Broadway. He had the accent and ego down pat. He did it all for the nookie.

They had the Monkee uniforms and the pics of them that donned the stage
were like the 2-colour separation shots of the guys on the “Listen To the
Band” box-set.

The bulk of the play took place recounting the story in ’67 with flashes
of the guys recounting stuff in ’97. There were only 2 others in the cast
who were unbelievable-bouncing from character to character with ease. The
woman who played their ’97 manager was the narrator, the crazy girl in the
audience, to every other female in the musical. The other guy played
everyone from the Kirchner-like character to Elton John (I kid you not).

The music was undeniably like the monkees but different. I could pick
out the “last train” song (Lincoln Center), the “I’m a Believer” song (An
Angel Eyes), the “Daydream Believer” song (He Rides for Her)……number is this again? ” “17!” “Oh, it’s cause I’m the cute one, I
know”>>….the “Valerie” song(Adrienne), the “Auntie Grizelda”song, (Mrs.
Murphy) complete with silly sound effects……and their theme, (Heads up,
We’re the Pennies)…dime>>>>>. So funny-ESPECIALLY I would think to people who really get the
whole thing (like you out there). At this show there was a range of 5 yr.
olds to many many seniors. Even the seniors seemed to enjoy themselves,
though I wouldn’t think they would necessarily get all the inside jokes, jabs
and musical/visual paradies. Personally, I don’t think it’s great for little
kids because there was some bad language here and there.

The writers certainly did their homework! Man! I want to talk about it
more, but I don’t want to spoil it for those who might actually see it. If
you go, don’t be too sensitive about all the pokes and jabs-it is all in
great fun…..Just a little more….

Then of course there is the reunion in ’97 spurred on by a remake of the
“Steppin’ Stone”-like song, “You Reap What You Sew” by the
Britney/Christina-esque Trinity..Of course, “Hair’ had reservations about it
and had a vision of Mike Nesmith appear to him (wool-hat and all) when he was
drunk and desperate on the Brooklyn Bridge….oh boy! The “reunion” show was
like a little concert….Glenn the Peter guy had the Peter-sticky-up-hair and
red jacket and did his research well. Well, if you wanna hear more email me
privately and I’ll tell ya. If you are in the area, I know I’m going once
more. It is playing June 1, 2, 8, 9 at 8pm and 3pm matinees on June 2, 9.
Prices- $22 gen public ($15 for seniors) for 8pm shows and $10 matinees. For
More info, call box-office at 732-224-2411. They even have CD’s for sale at
$15 a pop. I went by myself but my enthusiasm got my husband’s interest up
so I think I can get him to go with me probably on June 9 for another
matinee. Red Bank, the nearest town, is a cool little city and you would
have a great time hanging out there before and/or after the show if you
wanted to. Oh, and the show was just under 2 hours I believe. Thanks and
good night!

Hey all!
Went to the Cleveland show last night at the big Rib Cook-Off with a couple
of good friends () and am still flabbergasted!
The weather was fine until right before the guys came out; a huge dark
storm cloud started moving in, so the guys started the show a half-an-hour
early, hoping to possibly beat the storm, I think. After the first song or
two, the rain began to come down, and then a tremendous gust of wind hit,
blowing the promo banner from the back of the stage and knocking down
several instruments, Peter’s keyboard among them. The guys left for several
minutes so that the water could be cleaned up from the stage and the
instruments could be secured, and then much to their credit, they came back
and played for another hour and fifteen minutes or so, even though it
rained the entire time.
They kept thanking all of us for sticking out the bad weather, but I just
want to applaud them because a lot of bands would have taken one look at
the rain and lightning and cancelled the concert, but they didn’t. They
stayed and as always, put on one hell of a show. 🙂 Can’t wait to see them
again in Sterling Heights next month!

There’s one line from “I’m A Believer” that has been going through my head
for the last few days. It’s the one that says, “When I needed sunshine, I
got rain.” How appropriate for all who braved the rain & attended the
outdoor concert in Cleveland on May 26th! The foul weather was not
unexpected. It had been raining steadily in Ohio for the entire week, but
that didn’t discourage fans from going to the show. They danced, they sang
& they held their “We Love The Monkees” signs, seemingly oblivious to the
inclement weather. When lightening illuminated the sky, one girl remarked
that if she had to get struck by it, she couldn’t think of a better place
to die than at a Monkees concert.

Despite less than cooperative weather, The Monkees gave yet another stellar
performance. There was an unscheduled intermission early in the show when
strong wind & heavy rain forced everyone off the stage which, by the way,
had a roof but no backing. After the equipment was covered for protection,
the band took the stage once again & played without interruption for the
rest of the night. Gone from this show were Davy’s renditions of “The
Brady Bunch” theme & “Girl” as well as his Broadway show tunes. Years of
smoking have taken their toll on his voice. While I wouldn’t go as far as
saying that Davy’s vocals were raspy, I do think that their quality has
degenerated over the years. For lack of a better phrase, I’ll say that he
didn’t sound as smooth as he did when he was younger. However, his
rendition of “I Wanna Be Free” was his best live performance of that song
that I’d ever heard.

Also absent from the concert were Micky’s renditions of “Purple Haze” & his
tunes from Micky & The One Nighters. However, he managed to mesmerize the
crowd with “Goin’ Down” & “Randy Scouse Git”.

One song that didn’t get cut from the show was Peter’s version of,
“Lucille”. This was rightfully so since he genuinely seemed to enjoy
playing it & the crowd certainly enjoyed hearing it. Peter’s enthusiasm
was evident throughout the show. It was obvious that he enjoyed being
there which added a great deal to the concert.

It was unfortunate that the horn section didn’t get cut from the
performance, or at least medicated with Ritalin. For those who have not
seen them, they’re three dorky twenty-somethings who bounced around like
idiots regardless of whether or not they were playing instruments. They
were nothing more than distractions from the show & if they were trying to
be funny or cute, they failed miserably. However, neither rain nor an
annoying horn section will keep this fan from her Monkees.

As most of you no doubt already know, The Monkees performed in Cleveland on
May 26th at the Burke Lakefront Airport. Without a doubt, this concert is
the first one I’ve ever been to that was held at an airport. In Detroit (my
hometown), we normally do concerts in concert venues, and usually fly planes
out of airports. But, I guess the folks in Cleveland just need to feel a
bit different! In addition to the unusual locale, it was also the wettest
concert I’ve ever attended, with the rain starting just a few minutes into
the show. Another first for me was having a concert with a “rain delay” —
the rain burst in with a blast of wind, knocking over amplifiers, equipment,
etc., so the group had to take a 5 minute break while the equipment was
reset! The water, however, did not put a damper on the fun. This concert
was the third time I’ve been to a live Monkees concert, and I maintain that
they put on one of the most enjoyable shows that I’ve seen from any rock
group. In addition to the great tunes we all know and presumably love, they
mix in subtle and not-so-subtle humor. The other Monkees concerts I
attended were in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Puyallup, Washington. Of the
three, this crowd was the most “into” it. Despite the rain (or perhaps
partially because of the rain?), this crowd seemed to be having a ball. I
know I was! I was a little surprised (although certainly not disappointed)
that the music was heavily weighted towards music from Head. Does anyone
know if there is any particular reason? Is there, perhaps, a re-release of
Head in the works? Just speculation on my part, of course! Considering how
much fun these concerts are to attend, I hope The Monkees will decide to do
more tours in the not-too-distant future.

ride some coasters!)

I went to see the Monkees in Lexington, Kentucky on May 27, 2001. It was a
great show! I had never seen them in concert (I am 36) and was curious as
to how good a show it woulld be…..I was not disappointed! The guys
played for 2 hours and covered enough Nesmith material (and even gave him
credit) to satisfy this Nez fan! They did and great job and seemed to
really enjoy themselves. I was suprised as to how entertaining and
talented that Peter Tork was and wished that he had sang more solos! Micky
was Micky, funny and energetic! Davy still had the moves, although I think
that he is the least talented of the four, but had the most on-stage
time! There were few songs left unperformed, but I could have stayed even
longer! They performed in a baseball stadium and we were seated (or stood)
on the ballfield. People of all ages were dancing and having a great
time. They said that this the first time that they had every played
Lexington and I am very glad that they did!

Thank you for this mailing alert list that enabled me to know about the
concert and attend!

(ed: you are welcome, it’s why we are here!)

I am outside the Lexington viewing and listening area and the Louisville
stations did not promote the show at all! Thanks again and to all those
Monkees fans out there who are thinking about seeing one of the shows, go
it is great fun!

Well that’s when the show starts. I’m not sure when he’ll be on…

Hey Everybody,

The Monkees appearance on The Early Show on CBS has been confirmed for
Thursday May 31st. Please check your local listings for times.

I also wanted to share a bit of bad news with all of you. Davy’s horse
Digpast fell in a race on Saturday breaking his shoulder. Unfortunately,
Digpast did not survive the injury. Please join us in sending our deepest
sympathy to Davy.

I was wondering if Digpast died on Sunday. My husband and I went to the
Lexington concert and when Davy was introducing “I’ll Love You, Forever” he
said that he had lost a good friend that day while the friend was
racing. My husband said that Davy said something to the effect of “Play it
for Diggy”. I couldn’t find anything online about Digpast having died, and
was just wondering if that was the friend who had died.

Brad,
First of all, I just want to thank you for all the hard work you do
getting this newsletter out to all of us. If it weren’t for your efforts,
I don’t think I would have had any idea about the tour!

(ed: shucks!)

Went to the Lexington show Sunday, and it was great! (A lot more lively
than Columbus…the Columbus show was inside a fancy theatre, so they
wanted us to sit most of the time. Lexington was at a ballpark, so the
more people standing, the better!)
We got there pretty early, so we managed front row seats…and with the
exception of the REALLY drunk 50-something woman next to us who kept waving
album covers in our face, it was really a good time.
I am amazed at how much energy those guys still have. They put on a great
show, and I have to disagree with the woman who posted a review earlier
this week and complained about the 3 brass players (and dancers) in the
back. I thought they fit in really well with the whole atmosphere, and we
noticed that the guys kept looking back and laughing. I saw that those
same three brass players were dancing on Regis and Kelly this morning,
too! (I did, however, notice that on Regis, they said that their tour
kicks off on June 9th. Maybe they consider this a ‘pre-tour’?)
Hope everyone gets a chance to see the show. And I hope this isn’t their
last tour…I’m sure they have at least 10 good years left in them!
Thanks again.

Hey guys,

I just found out (through a friend with tickets) that the Aug. 3, 2001
Monkees concert in Savannah, GA was canceled. My friend was told the
cancellation was due to “routing problems.” I find that odd as they have a
couple of days between the Florida dates and that one, then a rather large
gap after. Anyone have more information on this? Have they scheduled more
concerts elsewhere that made the Georgia date impossible? If so, bad for my
friend but possibly good for me. ;-P

Monkees content: There’s a full page article with Natural discussing what
it was like being on tour with the Monkees in the July ’01 issue of Pop
Star! magazine—-has a nice (altho small) photo of the Monkees and Natural
together. The issue of Pop Star has a several page section on Natural and a
fold-out centerfold poster, as well. All this before their record even
comes out!!!

On my first “fun” day out since spending the last month working on the new
issue of MBF, I was cruising Freehold Raceway Mall (NJ) and I visited the
Claire’s there to see if they had the Natural CD-ROM which is advertised on
Claire’s website. The clerk looked very annoyed and informed me, “We ain’t
got no CD like that.” 🙂 Fortunately, I happened to be going by the Six
Flags Outlet on my way home, and at the Claire’s there the manager said
she’d gotten her personal copy of the CD-ROM already and was expecting to
receive a quantity by the end of the week. She showed me the issue of Pop
Star. She said Natural will be making personal appearances at Claire’s
stores all over the U.S. and they will be live and in person at the Freehold
store on July 12. She said she was surprised anyone had heard of them
already! She didn’t say what she thought of the CD, tho.

One more interesting thing about Natural (and then I’ll shut up): I was
searching the web to see if their songs were available anywhere as
downloads. When I didn’t find anything under Natural, I started searching
by song title and found “Where The Party’s At” and “Back For More” credited
as UNRELEASED *NSync tunes! So they’re getting *NSync’s old
hand-me-downs.

Hi Brad,
Just wanted to get some news out to loyal Monkee fans. I interviewed
Davy Jones 2 weeks ago for preview of current tour, (I write for a
Cleveland newspaper where the tour opened Saturday, May 26th, in the
middle of a major rain storm!). Also met and spoke with Davy, Micky
and Peter at a private rehearsal the night before. In fact, my wife
and I were only audience members.
I gotta admit it was a GREAT experience! I plan to post everything
in the summer issue, (July), of Twelveteen Online Magazine, which is
part of my entertainment business. By the way, the Davy interview
lasted almost an hour and was so funny we had to keep trying to catch
our breath because we were laughing so hard! The complete interview
will be posted.
You may have visited our magazine before. I’m the author of the
book, “How To Be A Working Comic,” which features an interview with
Micky Dolenz about starring in a successful TV sitcom. Out-takes and
backstage photo from this interview are currently in the “Hall of
Fame” section of the magazine which is located at
http://www.thecomedybook.com/Magazine/Index.htm
I’m alerting you to this because it looks like that article with
Micky will be replaced by the interview with Davy – along with the
Monkee’s rehearsal experience/review.
If you’ve enjoyed Micky’s interview in the past – I hope you’ll read
it again during this next month. Then stop back in July and get all
the new scoop from Davy.
Keep Laughing!!
