David Jones Races Ahead

Amateur jockey/entertainer David Jones is scheduled to ride in the first
race of a six-race card on Tuesday, February 3, on the all-weather course
at Lingfield Park. The Peach Amateur Riders’ Handicap is for four year-olds
and up, at a distance of one mile, for a purse of 3750 added. Twenty-two
horses are entered, making a split field a possibility.

Jones’s mount, Digpast, is an 8 year-old chestnut gelding, owned by David’s
daughter, Sarah Jones, and trained by J. Bridger. Digpast is an Irish bred,
by the currently Pennsylvania-based stallion Digamist (Blushing Groom —
Disconiz, by Northern Dancer), out of Starlit Way (GB).

Digpast’s last outing was on January 17 on the same track, in the 7 furlong
Ladbroke All-weather Trophy Handicap (Final) for 13000. Digpast closed at
long odds of 25 to 1. In spite of being “soon outpaced and well behind,” he
made “good headway on outside” and “finished fast” to come in second. Note
that Tuesday’s race is at a slightly longer distance, but against weaker
competition. This horse seems to be in fine form and could be a contender
on Tuesday.

As indicated by the name, this race is for amateur jockeys only. Five
female riders are already listed in the early entries.

For those wondering how it went for David and Digpast at the races:
My friend sent me the following account of the race:

I have just seen the race. I will send a fuller account later this
evening. Digpast, the old rascal, refused to start and so he and Davy got
a nice ride round at the back of the field.

The danger was that Digpast would be slow from the gate, but this was
worse. A few seconds before the gates opened Davy, knowing the start was
only a few seconds away, could be seen nudging Digpast as if to alert him
to be ready. The horse took no notice. When the gates opened the horse
just stood there. Davy hesitated. By the time the horse started it was
too late, the others had gone.

Davy and Digpast got some exercise, though they could have done it more
cheaply at home. It must have been disappointing. They went around well
behind the others and returned safely. They were never in the race.

One of the more inexperienced riders fell off just as her horse passed the
finishing post (she was not winning; she looked hurt, but will probably by
OK; Davy and Digpast cantered safely past her).

Sorry this is kind of late…but we just found out. In the latest issue of
Entertainment Weekly (Issue #417-February 6, 1998) on the last page entitled
“Time Capsule/February 12, 1967” at the bottom you will find a picture of the
Monkees (the one where they are wearing cowboy hats & holding guns to the
camera). The message accompanying the picture reads:

“Those telegenic Beatles wannabes the Monkees make true believers of their
critics, remainging No.1 on the pop chart for the seventh straight week with
“I’m a Believer.” After breaking up, three members of the band would reunite
and tour in 1986.”

It may have not been very nice…but it was a mention…just letting you
know…

VH-1 is airing a special about Grease this weekend (at various times). Before
one commercial break, the host asks, “What is the connection between Richard
Gere, Joe Piscapo, and the Monkees?” Later in the special, we are given a long
list of names who have played Vince Fontaine on stage, and Micky and Davy are
both mentioned, along with photographs of them.

Just thought I would mention this in case anyone wants to watch for it. It’s
always fun to hear/see the Monkees mentioned, wherever, and however small! 🙂

who “got lucky” and they mentioned Bette Nesmith’s invention of Liquid
Paper & showed a picture of her. The man went on to say, “If the name
Nesmith sounds familiar to you, her son is Michael Nesmith of the Monkees,”
then they put up a pic of Mike circa 1967 w/ woolhat. He also gave Mike
credit for inventing MTV.

/me heart is still thumping!!!

“When should my daughter date?” and the mother (I don’t remember her

(then, I think Rosie said “What about Micky?” but I’m not sure because
it was muffled).

“Last Train to…?”

“In case you are wondering about that brutal ‘cancelled’ stamp
across the Monkees tour dates to the Crown entertainment brochure
circulated last week, the facts are these:

“The fabricated ’60s pop group attempted a comeback a year ago
when Mickey [sic] Dolenz, Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork and Davy Jones
embarked on a British tour. It was a disaster.

“Why? Possibly because they still have almost nothing common,
and don’t like each other very much.

“The hungriest Monkees — Dolenz, Tork and Jones (Nesmith
inherited squillions from his mum who invented Liquid Paper) —
tried again.

“But that attempt has ended in tears in the US and now,
apparently, the Monkees are extinct. So. Who cares?”

Spring ’98 issue of DISNEY magazine

Davy Jones is featured in a question/picture in the “Ask David” section. The
question is “I have a copy of a song by former Monkee Davy Jones called ‘Happy
Birthday Mickey Mouse.’ It’s from 1978 and I assume it was made to
commemorate Mickey’s 50th birthday. Was this song authorized by the Disney
company? Was Davy Jones involved in any other Disney project besides this one
and a 1977 appearance in ‘The Bluegrass Special’ on the Wonderful World of
Disney?”

ans: “The song ‘Hey Ra Ra Ra-Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse’ was actually written
by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn, but was sung first by Davy Jones ‘and a
Million Kids’ on a Warner Bros. record in England in 1978. The song was
copyrighted by Disney. Jones appeared only in ‘The Bluegrass Special’ for
Disney”

Then there’s a picture of Davy from the Bluegrass Special on top of a horse,
wearing a pinkish shirt, khaki pants and a green riding helmet. There’s also
a copy of the record sleeve. Davy with Disney characters and a couple of kids.

Right now TV Guide’s web site is running a game called “FotoFlip”…you
keep removing cards to reveal a TV band or group until you can guess
who it is (like the old game of Concentration). The fewer cards you
remove, the higher your score. The Monkees are one of the 10 you can
guess…but I’ll leave it up to you to figure out which one.

Hi everyone,

I’m not sure how many people have seen it or know about it already, but
there’s a commercial out for Pearle Vision featuring the song, “Mary,
Mary”. Look for it!

Also, a friend has informed me that there’s a Monkee reference in the
cartoon, “Jungle Cubs”. It’s in an episode in which the characters start
a band. When they are trying to think up a name for the band, the monkey
suggests naming it “The Monkeys”. After he makes the suggestion, they
show him wearing a green wool hat.

An update from Michael Nesmith’s Web Store:

From: Foreman
Subject: Greetings From Navajo Slim At Videoranch

Hi there!
Thought I’d drop you a line to fill you in on some news in case you haven’t
been by Videoranch ( http://www.videoranch.com ) in a while.

But, first off, I want to say that if you don’t like hearing from me unless
you ask me to email you about something specific, I’m sorry, and just send
this email back and ask me to leave you alone and we’ll take your address off
this list.

Business has been great and we’re having a good time here at the ranch.

We’ve had the video “An Evening With Sir William Martin” in for just a couple
of weeks and it’s already become our bestseller. When they run out, that will
be it for quite a while and maybe forever, so if you’re interested in buying
one, now’s your chance. It’s a strange and cosmically funny piece and it
includes the original version of the song “Antarctica” as well as the story
about Bobby, the boy who was tragically hip. The band “Tragically Hip” got
their name from this story. http://www.videoranch.com/gshop/index.html?t=frproduct&c=2&p=53

Tapeheads is back in stock on VHS (NTSC only) and the price has been reduced
to $24.95. It’s a great musical comedy and has begun to have a real cult
following. We sell the soundtrack as well and you can sample the songs at Videoranch.
http://www.videoranch.com/gshop/index.html?t=frproduct&c=2&p=8

The Prison/Garden 2 CD set is also one of our best sellers these days. It’s a
nice package and a good value.

We also have our new “Neftoon Zamora’s Trading Post” open for business. Right
now we only have moccasins for sale, but oh what moccasins they are. They are
the only moccasins still handmade the way they used to be. They really are
works of art, yet extremely comfortable to wear. I have a pair of the Suwaras
and they are the best shoes I’ve ever owned. They look like something Ralph
Lauren wishes he had come up with himself. These shoes are not souvenirs you
buy from the Southwest. They are the actual moccasins the tribes around here
wear, especially for their dances. They also last for a long time, unlike
other brands. We’re working on making the ordering instructions more simple
so, in the meantime, if you have questions about them, you can email me or
call Alex at 505-455-2079.

Please check out the new “Nez and Videoranch FAQ”. You can get to it from the
Home Page of Videoranch. It might be helpful to you or at least interesting.
We had fun putting it together.

That’s all for now, but I want to close by saying “Thank you” to all you guys
for all your business and support. One thing we’ve all found out from working
here at the ranch is that all Nez fans are cool and nice. We get great emails
from you and Alex has had some great conversations with some of you and we
really appreciate it.

Yours truly, Navajo Slim

MONKEES TOUR BAND
Aviva, the multi-talented musician who played saxophone, flute, clarinet,
and keyboards and provided backing vocals in the Monkees’ backing band of
the last two years, has recorded a solo CD, “Reed My Mind”, to be released
in March. Monkees 1997 keyboard player Kincaid Miller doubled as producer
and co-writer on the project, and Monkees’ 1996-97 lead guitarist Wayne
Avers also played on the album and contributed a song or two to the
project. The format is “smooth jazz”—a style popularized by artists like
Kenny G. and Dave Koz—mostly instrumental, but a few songs will feature
vocals. Orders are being accepted now for the autographed limited edition
(a thank you to Monkees fans for all their support!) of Aviva’s “Reed My
Mind” CD; send your check or money order for $15 per CD plus $2.50 shipping

Monkees’ 1996-97 lead guitarist Wayne Avers will conduct a guitar workshop,
March 12 at 7 pm at the Robert M. Sides Family Music Center, 201 Mulberry
St., Williamsport, PA. Call 800-326-9450 for directions and further info.
John Blair, producer of Davy’s “Just For The Record” series, set up the
workshop and says Wayne will discuss guitar technique and highlights of his
