Kathy,

How nice for you and your daughter. My three and a half year old daughter LOVES the Monkees and what a thrill that is for me! She often asks me to call Davy! (and gets mad when I don't!). She does get confused when she sees recent pictures of them...the whole 30 years later thing is lost on her. Glad you had a wonderful time and wonderful experience! Mary

VH1's Behind the Music & Movie did spark my interest again in the Monkees last Summer seeing it on TV. I've always enjoyed watching the shows originally in the 60's and the rerun's to this day, but the Internet made it happen. If it wasn't for my son poking around on the internet one night, I would not have an idea that the Reunion Tour was happening. I just wish they do more Radio advertisement of the shows.

Just got back from Detroit. The Monkees were so aweseome in Sterling Heights! I had row 17 (moved up one tho... then to the stage). Didn't meet anyone of you ppl I've talked to... unless one of you is the guy that was sitting next to a guy w/ the purple Monkee shirt and kept showing everyone his autograph...? Well I had to sneak my camera in my sock and then like after 3 pics one of the security guards was like "NO MORE PICTURES!! NO MORE!!" Geez what's up his booty? But now I wish I woulda asked what the Monkees said about cameras - in a little booklet it said they allow cameras if it's alright w/ the artist. Kinda weird that they'd allow cameras in March but not in June... I'm not down w/ security. I tried to give Peter a card twice and the second time it took 2 guards to make me leave. (It said "I love you because you're thoughtful and handsome and kind... and because I've decided that it's unrealistic to keep holding out for Davey Jones. [I crossed out the E.]) Davy picked it up and I hope Peter got it... I took more pics tho... only got 12 but it's all gravy. The live CD is awesome and the monkeY is so cute... Sandy gave me his set list and I stole the flowers off the speaker that some stage dude put up there... but if I could live that night again it would be the same (except for the security guards and the rain and how they didn't do the acoustic set or Shades of Gray... but that's all!)

The security Guard in Knoxville was a DOLL. He actually moved out of the way so people could get a better camera shot! Ree... Did you see him? he was on the left of the stage (from our POV). Anyway, he ended up letting me SIT on the speakers when others were chased down by not-so-nice Security Guards. He was the nicest (and handsome, too!). I guess it just depends on the individual security guard..... Kari

They better not be like that at the Ft. Meyers concert. I'm taking a digital camera and plan on taking a lot of pics. Back in March, at House of Blues in Orlando they searched everyone's purses and held on to cameras during the concert. Then they tried to say it was the artist's wishes. If the Monkees really didn't want to be photographed then they wouldn't let cameras at the other concerts and wouldn't take pics with people after the show. HOB made me very upset, but it was still an excellent concert. Also, at the Ft. Meyers concert at the end of July, do you think they would allow camcorders? I was planning on taking my camcorder, but I don't want to look like an idiot if I get tackled by security for having it.

Cameras at concerts

If you're having second thoughts about taking a camera or recorder or anything to the concerts, here's a tip...take them ANYWAY!!! For my sake! On the stupid ticket it said "no cameras no recorders" and I didn't want to get tackled by a security guard or have it taken away, so I left my camera in the car. And then all these people were taking pictures and I just kept picturing mine....in my trunk...just lying there. Not to mention I would regret not taking it sooo much, when we got backstage and especially after the only role we had was ruined. If I could turn back time...if I could find a way...

Stayzia, if you are looking for the original vinyl album bootleg of "Monkeeshines", good luck! I haven't seen it for years! It was around during the mid '80s during the initial reunion, but I haven't seen it for sale or anything since then.

I have a copy of "Monkeeshines" recorded onto cassette tape and there is nothing on there that hasn't been released via the MISSING LINKS CD volumes. Your best bet is to weed through those three volumes for unreleased material.

This is some info I found on Brandon Cruz :

BRANDON CRUZ - Eddie Is A Punk (CD, Taang!, Pop/rock) If the name Brandon Cruz doesn't immediately ring a bell, perhaps The Courtship Of Eddie's Father will. Cruz was the innocent little chap who said all those cute things to father Bill Bixby and Mrs. Livingston (one of the hottest Asian babes ever to hit television). Brandon is a big boy now, and he's lost his innocence. This curious disc is a culmination of recordings Cruz has amassed over the years. More a curiosity than anything else, this disc features no less than four (???) versions of "Best Friend" (the theme from the t.v. show) featuring artists such as the aforementioned Bixby, Harry Nilsson and Mickey Dolenz. The rest of the disc features punk tunes on which Cruz penned the lyrics (the music was written by other folks). This isn't as listenable as it is peculiar. May possibly be a collectable at some point in the future... (Not Rated)

Sounding Off - THE MONKEES (1966)

From: Mark J. Meli

Comments

THE MONKEES (1966) – Okay, so maybe the concept here was a soundtrack album to a TV show, but since the show was about a musical group, and since that group already had a chart hit single…The Monkees was as “real” a group as any for 1966! Since Micky, Davy, Mike & Peter sang all the songs, the only real deception here is the script “Plays Guitar And Sings” on the rear cover of this first Monkees album. That was the big mistake made by the Colgems graphics department…it just didn’t have to be there. Maybe the Monkees weren’t a “band” in the sense of The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, but they certainly were in the sense of musical groups like The Mamas & The Papas, The Temptations and The Beach Boys…and who ever attacked them for not playing their instruments? In the wake of pop music fans who had aged a couple years since the British Invasion started, advancing psychedelia suited them fine (i.e.: The Beatles’ REVOLVER). But for those who missed it, who were a couple of years younger, THE MONKEES fits the ticket perfectly! This is a fine album of uniformly crafted 1960’s pop music. We all know what the hits are, but let’s not forget some other classic hits on this album like “This Just Doesn’t Seem To Be My Day.” Two of the album’s tracks were actually “cover tunes” as The Astronauts had a single with “Tomorrow’s Gonna Be Another Day” on RCA in 1965, and The Hollies took “I’ll Be True To You” to the UK top 10 under the title “Yes I Will” also in 1965. Fortunately for the Monkees, neither charted well in the United States, so both come off as fresh as daisies on the album.

I'm sorry suzanne, but I cracked up at your last post. : ) I am pretty sure the "blue dork stick" is just a normal blue glow stick, which means you can find them anywhere, not just in Michigan. I use to always call The Monkees first album "Meet The Monkees" because of those words on the back cover, and because of The Beatles "Meet The Beatles" LP.

When I was 11, I use to play "The Monkees" LP to death on my little mono deluxe record player. "Sweet Young Thing" getting the most plays followed by "Saturday's Child" and "Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day". I knew nothing of the origins of the group, and sure enough, I believed what it said on the back of the cover. So were they trying to put us on?

Good marketing huh?

First, they sent it to the wrong address so it took over a month to get to me. I ordered a large. The body fits fine but the sleeves are too short. I understand they are all out of X-large. Second, it is not a fully accurate copy in that the collar is a little different and the red is too bright. The Monkees red was a little deeper. In any event, I can't wear it because it doesn't fit. Not that I was going to wear it to work, but it would be nice if I could wear it. So I gave it to my wife but it is too big for her! My Monkeeheart was broken over the whole deal. You say older women can actually TALK as if younger women cannot. I myself have more relationships with older men for exactly that reason--I KNOW how to TALK while younger men do NOT. And what makes you think Peter and Davy's relationships went "down the drain?" I just ended a 4 year relationship with a man much older and just because it ended does not mean it went "down the drain." It ran it's course just as every relationship I've ever had did. It lasted longer than any relationship I've ever been in, because he was the most mature.

It is possible to talk in general terms without sounding judgmental.

I believe "Her Name is Love" is an early pre-Monkees Davy solo song. I don't have a Monkees book handy to check it. Chris knows more detail on Monkees solo recordings, so I'll leave it up to him to confirm this point.

"So How's By You" is not a song, it's just a short gag/line from the TV show incorporated into the mix of songs on the album, as is "Iranian Tango". Both of those songs are not official Monkees songs.

Chris is right when he says this bootleg is of horrible quality. I remember seeing a picture/track listing of it in 1986 and searching high and low for it since at that point, there were no Missing Links volumes out there to have access to unreleased recordings.

I finally got a cassette copy of the album off someone in late 1986/early 1987. It was cool to have at that point, but then Missing Links Vol. 1 came out and began to make those horrible boots unnecessary.

I know what you mean about getting wet, my program was drenched and I bought the tie dyed shirt and the color ran all over my shorts. I had no idea the Freedom Hill venue didn't have covering, I understand the need for security, but the guards went overboard, they even were walking aisles just watching people who were doing nothing but sitting. I wondered why the accoustic set was dropped to, also I found it strange they didn't do Heart and Soul everytime I've seen them they've played it. I got the impression from the people I was sitting by that this was the first Monkee concert for a lot of people. But that's a good thing, also it could have been because of the guards so many people were sitting so still.

Let's not forget, also, that the BYRDS did not play on their first recording sessions either. They weren't considered 'polished' enough... except for Roger McGuinn with his distinctive guitar sounds. As to the 'other' 1st album songs...lets not forget the novelty "Gonna Buy Me A Dog", which was written by Tommy Boyce and performed by Gamma Goochee (Himself) on a 1965 single!!! It was also the song that Davy Jones sang when he guest-starred on "The Farmer's Daughter".

John, there are 3 Missing Links volumes. The first was in '87, then '90 and finally the last one in '96.

There are other Nez gems thoughout the volumes. "Saginaw" and "Of You" are great examples. In my opinion, the BEST unreleased Nez tunes appear on MUSIC BOX, like "St. Matthew," "Carlisle Wheeling," "All the Kings Horses," "Nine Times Blue" and "Some of Shelly's Blues." All of those songs, plus the two mentioned before, can be found within the Missing Links volumes.

There are some others to check out though, like "My Share of the Sidewalk" (sung by Davy) on ML 1, "Michigan Blackhawk" on ML 2, "The Crippled Lion" on ML 2, "Propinquity" on ML 3, "Little Red Rider" from ML 3, "Hollywood" from ML 3, "How Insensitive" from ML 3 and "Angel Band" from ML 3. I'm not too partial to any of the Nez songs on ML 3, though. Just a personal preference I guess.

Overall, the Missing Links volumes are cool. There are some other great songs on them, like Davy's "War Games" on ML 1, Micky's "Rosemarie" on ML 1 and the best of the studio takes of "Circle Sky" on ML 3. You obviously know "All of Your Toys" and stuff like that found on MUSIC BOX.

Let us know if you check them out. Here's a good site that has the MLs volumes at a decent price:

Speaking as a Mike fan,

I think only "HEAD", "Headquarters", & "PAC&J" surpass "Missing Links 2" in overall quality, & "ML3" is pretty good, too (though a bit quirkier). The only things worth owning on the first "Links" are "Nine Times Blue" & "All of Your Toys" (both of which are on "Music Box" & elsewhere), but "2" has one of my favorite Nez songs ("Michigan Blackhawk") & "3" has some interesting versions of songs he would later record solo ("Hollywood" & "Little Red Rider") that are better than most of his tracks on "Monkees Present", as well as interesting non-commercial covers of "How Insensitive" & "Angel Band", both of which I like quite a bit.

You know, Bert's a funny guy. He was joking around once about how they named the movie "Head", so that if they ever did a sequel the promotion could go something like, "From the people who gave you 'Head'". Ha, ha Bert! Bryce Jordan PA Concert

From: suzannetigger

Comments

well we didn't get home til 2:30 AM this morning and then I couldn't get this site to post all morning but I'm going to try it again. Here goes: first about Bryce Jordan, it's a basketball arena in the PA State College sports complex that seats 16,000. I heard a ticket taker tell someone that 2/3 of the arena had been partitioned off but it looked more like 3/4 to me. all in all my best guess at attendance would be 3500 to 4000 we had first row seats behind the 10 or so rows of chairs placed on the floor in front of the stage for disabled folks ticket winners and VIPS. I stood up and scanned the audience and saw only very few empty seats way in the back. The sound quality was terrific, much better than at the State Theatre in March. David looks good in his shorter haircut, much younger looking and Micky looks as if he's relaxing and getting into it alot more. Peter Stole the show though with his wild outfits and jokes he was having a ball and the audience really responded to him. The music was really terrific and all of the guys were in fine form. Now for the set list. There is only one song I'm not to sure about I think it was circle sky, I do recognise it from Head but I haven't heard the album in so long I really can't be sure so if anyone who's been to a concert knows if it's wrong please correct me. 1.Last Train To Clarksville 2. Look Out Here Comes Tommorrow 3. For Pete's Sake (Peter sang) 4. Girl I knew Somewhere 5. Valleri (great guitar riff by Wayne somebody I didn't catch his last name) 6. Randy Scouse Git 7. Mary Mary 8. Auntie Grizelda 9. I wanna Be Free ( sorry Mark but Davy did the Tarzan Joke!) 10. I'll Love You Forever 11. Goin Down 12. Can You Dig It 13. Girl 14. Higher and Higher 15. Little Bit Me Little Bit You 16 Peter's Bach Piece 17. No Time 18. Circle Sky? 19. Since I fell For You 20. Lucille 21 Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby 22. That Was Then This Is Now 23. Porpoise Song 24 Listen To The Band 25. Daydream Believer Encore: 1. I'm A Believer 2. Steppin Stone 3. Pleasant Valley Sunday

The set list is streamlined no Mike remeberance acoustic set or Consider yourself stuff from Davy. I was sorry they didn't do Shades of Gray though. Natural came out and di about 6 songs first then it was like 1/2 hour before the Monkees came out they were setting up on stage for them. non proffessional type cameras were OK. The only folks allowed to go up to the stage at all were the folks in the chairs down front. you had to go down these narrow steps to get to the floor and a security guard was at each one sending people back to their seats. our seats were on the first row so we could stand up on the floor to applaud and such and they let my daughter sneak up a little bit closer for pics but thats all. We had a good time anyway and this time we were close enough to see the shine in Peter's red patent leather shoes. Micky got new duds this time and looked pretty spiffy too! Well thats all I cna think of for now. I did hear one of the workers at the concession stand say that they might run out of CD's before the tour is over though when my husband asked her about it. Too Bad to it is a really good rememberance of the tour but I'm still hoping for a new album with new songs to come out!

In 1986 an outside shed wouldn't be cut in half for The Monkees unless it was a stadium. The Monkees played a (cut in half) performance at Sullivan Stadium in Foxboro Ma in 1986 . That stadium can seat at least over 60,000 people. I think 20,000 or less was the final count. Paul McCartney in 1990 sold it out on 2 nights to a full house of 60,000, each night.

John,

I think some of Nesmith's best stuff was left unreleased off the original albums. Tracks like "Hollywood" (from ML3), "The Crippled Lion" (ML 2) , " Propinquity: I Just Begun To Care" (ML3) the alt and better vocal for "Circle Sky" (ML3). I wouldn't pass up any of those cds. Some really good stuff by all 4 Monkees. I like ML3 the best.

If you don't already have any Nesmith solo albums I would suggest picking up the these 2-fer imports.

John,

After "Pisces" and further away from "Birds and Bees..." , Nesmith didn't return to pop until "Rio" and the "Dogma" LP in 1979. He baffled much of his audience and dived straight into pop music with that album, a country flavour tune not found anywhere. He ended up selling the most LP's of his whole career, mainly due to the videos being shown in between movies on HBO.

Cory, I'm totally with you on having Weezer cover "Circle Sky"!!! This is a great topic. It gave me something to do! I tried to get a good balance of different artists, from different areas of the music business, but I’ve found that there aren’t many places where this project can deviate from rock/pop without totally losing the original sound. I also tried to get a mixture of currently popular artists, and time-tested survivors.

Rolling Stones “She”

Faith Hill “I Wanna Be Free”

Aerosmith “Salesman”

BT or Groove Armada (re-mix) “I'm A Believer”

Bon Jovi “Listen to the Band”

Nsync “I'll Love You Forever”

Lionel Richie doing “Come On In”

Sugar Ray “Last Train to Clarksville”

Bob Dylan “Pleasant Valley Sunday”

Sade “Shades of Gray”

R.E.M. “Look Out (Here Come Tomorrow)”

Destiny’s Child “Papa Genes Blues” (obviously this would have to be an r&b version)

Blink 182 “No Time”

Dave Matthews Band “Love Is Only Sleeping”

U2 doing “Mary, Mary”

Bee Gees (Maurice on lead vocal) “Saturday’s Child”

Goo Goo Dolls “Valleri”

BB King “Oh My, My”

Jonny Lang “Sweet Young Thing”

Fiona Apple “Porpoise Song”

Stevie Nicks “Long Title”

The Monkees' first album is awesome! Papa Gene's Blues, Sweet Young Thing, Saturday's Child, I Wanna Be Free, etc. Every one of those songs is a classic. Even I'm Gonna Buy Me a Dog is a great little blues romp. I bet the Monkees inspired more kids to pick up a guitar or pound the drums than any ten of the pop bands of today. They weren't a Backstreet Boys or N'Sync. The difference between the Monkees and today's boy bands is simple: the Monkees played rock and they didn't suck.

I have off this week and I'm cleaning out things...and I ran across interesting notes from the June 1995 edition of Monkee Business Fanzine, published by Maggie McManus.

Andrew Sandoval, who oversaw the reissues of Monkees albums onto CD and wrote the liner notes, is a longtime Monkees fan, and was being interviewed about the project in a magazine. Here are some quotes:

Asked how involved the Monkees were in the reissue process, Andrew explained, "They have been involved very much by contributing their stories and notes to the reissues. They weren't involved in getting the extra tracks together because, actually, the Monkees are the hardest artists to get to listen to their own material that you will ever meet. They do not, for the most part, want to listen to those records. It's not as much that they dislike the albums, it's that, well, they kind of have the attitude that they've heard it all before. Occasionally we'd get them to listen to some unreleased stuff, and they were either pleasantly surprised or they'd say, 'Oh, I don't know, maybe that shouldn't come out.' We tried to temper our selections with the artists' best interests. So yes, the Monkees were involved in the reissue series, but not directly with (bonus) track selection. As much as I said about them not wanting to listen to the records, they all have their favorite tracks. Michael Nesmith told me that "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones, LTD." might be his favorite record, although the general consensus of the group is that their favorite record is "Headquarters." They're also pretty big on the album "HEAD", as well. They're all happy to see these reissues---it is very gratifying."

--------------

Does anyone else find it interesting how the band did not want to investigate the depth of their catalog, or even revisit the original album tracks? You would think that these things nowadays would be a source of pride, especially when few groups get their catalogs reissued to the extent and with the care that Rhino handled the Monkees' discography.

What does everyone think?

From the March 1996 issue of Maggie McManus' Monkee Business Fanzine:

Reader Question: I saw the Monkees' 20th Anniversary live concert double album set for sale on CD in a catalog. When did this come out?

Maggie's Answer: It didn't. What you saw listed is a bootleg, recorded right off the vinyl double album that was sold at the 1987 Monkees concerts. That album is one of the rarest Monkees collectibles, as it was never released to stores, only sold at the live shows, and for years MBF readers have been asking when it will come out on CD. If you've never heard it, you may want to pick up the bootleg. If you're waiting for an "official" CD re-issue, take heart---Rhino's Andrew Sandoval tells MBF that the master tapes for the live album have recently been located, in storage at the studio where the album was mixed. At some point, Rhino may release it, if they can find space in their schedule for it and if they can strike a deal with Micky, Davy, Peter and David Fishof, who jointly own the rights to the live album. Unlike 1987, when Columbia Pictures didn't allow the live album to be released under the name "Monkees", this time it can come out as an offical "monkees" recording, since Rhino now owns the Monkees' name.

----------------

Last I heard, the original master tapes for the 1986 Live album were LOST and haven't been found. Until re-reading this I didn't realize that the tapes have been FOUND. If Rhino does indeed own this recording now and has the official master tapes, why haven't they made an attempt to release this? It seems like perfect timing since Fishof is back in the fold and Rhino owns the Monkees' name and copyright.

I've always considered owning the vinyl album a cool part of my collection, since it is indeed a fairly rare item. I also have the tape that I got through mail order, as I don't recall a cassette of it being sold at the '87 concerts.

Wouldn't it be nice if Rhino reissued and expanded this CD if possible...with extensive liner notes and photos in the CD booklet chronicling the Monkees' tremedous success in '86?

I've been an a die-hard audio collector and I love going to see them when they are in town. I was lucky - Freedom Hill is about seven miles from my house. I could have road my bike to the show. Hope to hear all your comments and input - I'll be checking in here from time to time. Scott.

You raise and excellent question Mark. Could one source of a lack of interest be the lack of involvement at the time the tracks were cut? I mean, in the early days when they weren't playing the music, why would the anyone but the one doing the vocals be interested in the track? (Why would Mike be interested in sitting dowm and discussing the artistic merits of I'm a Believer?) And in the later days when they were each selecting and producing thier own tracks individually, they would have no reason to be interested in revisiting the other members tracks. Obviously HQ would be the grand exception and explains why it is thier favorite. It is the one moment (besides touring) when the really were a BAND.

And now the movie has almost a cult type of following like Rocky Horror Picture Show Or something. I didn't see the Movie in the theater because I was too young. I saw it for the first time sometime in the 80's I think and I thought, Huh? I saw it again just a few months ago on AMC they played it right along with several other Rock Movies of the 60's and I had a little better understanding and actually enjoyed it. But I'm still not sure if the movie was made in an attempt to gain more popularity with the older crowd and heavier rock fans or to just blow them out of the water and finish them off once and for all so to speak

Like everyone else, i don't think there's an episode i DON'T like.

My top five episodes from the first season:

5: Pilot episode--especially the scene with Mike trying to cheer Davy up

4: Monkees at the Circus--especially the 'Sometime in the Morning' romp with the clowns

3: Success Story--just seeing the guys try to help davy out, and mike telling the grandfather off (so to speak)

2: Monkee Mother--that episode was just so sweet

1: I've Got a Little Song Here--seeing the guys stick up for Mike *sigh!*

Top five from Second season:

5: Mijacogeo--just seeing micky choke on the chain when mike pulls on it LOL!

4: Art, For Monkees Sake--the way they all, except Micky, bump into the pole. I'm surprised mike didn't break his nose when he hit it. Looked like he hit it pretty hard

3: Hillbilly Honeymoon--too many crack ups in that episode to count!

2: Fairy Tale--who DOESN'T like seeing the guys in drag?

1: The Devil and Peter Tork--i love Mike's speech!

I like the 67 live album better though when the Monkees did play I enjoy the garage band sound and more bluesy approach to Last Train and Mary Mary on that one then the so called "polished" music on the Monkees and More of the Monkees albums. Not to say they weren't good, as a kid I didn't have the live 67 album so I had nothing to compare and I like the Monkees first 2 albums quite fine and I still think they're good. I really sat back in my seat though the first time I heard the live album. I feel much the same way about the 2001 cd. It's good to hear it raw and not finished in some studio I guess.

Dare I jinx it, but if it is indeed halfway true that the trio is planning on recording an album of all new material this fall after the North American tour, I have a general "Dream Album" thought on what I *wish* would happen with the project.

First...the producer. My choice is simple, yet important, unflashy--yet steady. Chip Douglas. Douglas is the man responsible for creating the real 'sound' of the Monkees, which for me will always be the 'sound' found on the HEADQUARTERS and PISCES albums. He produced two of the Monkees' finest singles, "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Daydream Believer", not to mention their greatest B-side, "The Girl I Knew Somewhere." He knows what the individual talents of the Monkees are and seemingly was able to 'control' and focus the four Monkees in the studio long enough to complete a take, unlike Boyce and Hart and Kirshner, who failed miserabley (i.e.: "Gonna Buy Me a Dog"). Douglas has wanted to return to the fold for sometime now, I presume, as he wanted to contribute to both POOL IT! and JUSTUS. It's time for the Monkees to bring back their finest producer.

Second....the Monkees as musicians. It is essential that Micky and Peter be musically involved with this album. Micky is an accomplished drummer (just listen to JUSTUS for a more recent example) and Peter is of course, a multi-instrumentalist. And Micky has become a fine rhythm guitarist. I would want to see Micky drum at least half, if not all, of the album, and maybe contribute some rhythm guitar work along the way. I'd also like to see Peter concentrate on his bass guitar and piano work. David could of course thrown in his usual percussion parts...which seem unimportant but are really vital as the tambourine has played a large part in a lot of Monkees hits! :) (Seriously!)

Third...studio session players. I say ditch them! The session players on POOL IT!, though masterful, gave the album a cold, tinny feel. I propose using the backing band currently found on tour with the Monkees as their recording studio partners. The backing band and the three Monkees seem to have, no, DO HAVE, great chemistry. Jerry Renino, the bass player, told me backstage in March that the whole outfit has never played as good together as they were playing then. Plus, reward the backing band for their extreme loyalty. Renino, a member of the Peter Tork Project of the early '80s, has toured with the Monkees in 1989, 1996-1997 and 2001. He is also a staple at Micky and Davy's solo shows. Aviva and Wayne Avers have been with the Monkees from 1996-1997 and 2001, and also are staples at Micky and Davy's solo shows. If Micky wanted Sandy Genarro ('87, '97, '01 tour vet) to pitch in some drum work while he played rhythm guitar, so be it. Using the backing band would give the songs a more unified and cohesive sound.

Fourth...the album cover. Seeing as how the album cover for JUSTUS was a complete disaster IMHO, great lengths should be made to create a respectable album cover. A more serious photo of the band should appear on the front, perhaps a dramatic black and white shot, accompanied by a more at ease color picture of the trio and the backing band on the back.

Fifth....the songwriters. With Chip Douglas at the helm, I would think he would want the project to be open to outside songwriters, while accompanying a few of the Monkees' own individual offerings. This is a must. The Monkees never sounded better on an album, as far as the flow of things went, than they did on Pisces. Here they combined a couple of their own songs with the outside songwriters. This is a must. To me, the Monkees don't have to prove that they can write and produce an album on their own. They did that partly in 1967 and again fully in 1996. Get over it guys!!!! Accept a contribution from Bobby Hart (who wrote the great "Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere" in 1986 for the Monkees).

Sixth...a collaboration. A key to the success of a veteran act like Santana these past couple of years has been his association with the young and currently popular bands of the day. Look what Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty did for him! I'd love to hear Mark McGrath from Sugar Ray duet with Micky, or Michael Stipe contribute harmony vocals to a fast, upbeat Monkees tune in the vein of REM's "Shiny Happy People". How cool would that be? Remember, Stipe of REM has continually praised the Monkees over the years. REM played Monkees covers in their early club days, and Stipe said he wouldn't allow himself to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame until the Monkees are inducted first.

Well, those are just a few ideas I have for a proposed new Monkees album. Let's see everyone's comments, additions or thoughts on what a new album should be like it!

Cory, Well it's not true that they were actually going to use that as promotion, but it was true that Bert just said it as a joke.

You know, I don't think it's a matter of the actual movie being made as a farewell or to sabotage the phenomenon, as much as just the promotion was. I mean, the movie was a collective effort from Rafe, Jack, and the boys. They wanted it to be the way it turned out. But after that, it was up to outside forces to promote the movie and they didn't do it in a very effective way.

Cory, though my copy of this video is packed away, and not having seen it in four or five years, I can't answer your questions right now.

But if I may add, I believe Rhino laid out $12,000 (!) for that short little video to be made. My question is this....why didn't they instead professionally record the Billboard Live Club mini-concert from the fall of '96, combine it with the 30 minute video of the making of JUSTUS and add in bits and pieces of interview footage documenting the making of the album, for a VHS and DVD release? Even though it would have been more costly, they probably could have been able to make the money back as the demand for audio/video of the Billboard concert was extremely high in late '96/into '97 if I recall correctly.

lets just put it this way. My husband really has no desire to attend this wedding even if it is his son getting married (second time around). I told him no way was I going to his son's wedding without him and since I already had planned the Boston event and he had agreed he would come with me to this one, not just wait outside in the car like he's planning to do in PA and he did last March in Easton. We pretty much have decided that an unavoidable emergency has arisen and that we must go to Boston immediately for some imagined event. Or else I'll just feign illness. At any rate we would much rather be in Boston than at some firehouse wedding reception on a sweaty hot July day mixing with relatives we really dislike! So now I'm going to be looking for a dork stick. Does it have to be blue?

Nothing goes on backstage like what your dad thinks. Lately it's been rather boring! For the last three shows I've been to, they tell you where to stand, it's a small room, and you are lined up in a circle against the wall. Then each Monkee comes in one at a time and stops at each person in order. People from the venue usually keep a close watch and everyone is very well behaved. After about 10 minutes you are escorted out. That's it. Those backstage things you hear about and that your dad is worried about is what goes on with hard rock bands like Aerosmith and the Stones.

The best place to meet any of the guys is not back stage. I've met all 4 many times, not once did I meet them back stage. Be creative... hotels, buses..

The thing is, when the tour gets bigger, the harder it gets to meet them.

The first time I met any of the guys was in 1989. After a show in Mansfield Ma myself and some friends were in traffic leaving the show. We just happen to pull out of traffic for some reason. Well..who would we see pull out into traffic..but a van full of the backing musicians. We had no idea that Micky and Davy would also be inside. Well we pull right in behind them and followed the van to the hotel. Just as we were pulling in, I saw the side profile of Micky's face (a pan! ..JK).. anyway..we jumped out and Micky went staight inside. We then turn around and there is Davy. He signed autographs and posed for pictures.

We got the idea to hold camp and we hung around for a while. Micky never left his room, but Davy was down in the bar. We found out that Peter went down to Conn to stay with relatives. We got a room and stayed the night.

The next morning, we got up early. We went outside to the tour bus, spoke with the driver who told us the band would be leaving early, but Micky and Davy would be driving themselves to the airport.

Next we met up with Jerry Renino who told us they were leaving but Micky and Davy would be out in about an hour. We then went to sit down for breakfast. Just as we were being served pan cakes..Micky comes down the stairs, hair still wet and looking very tired. He was in shorts and a tee w/ a jacket on. He went to the desk, paid the bill, and made a phone call to Davy's room. The bell hop tried to take his bags, but Micky said he would do himself. He then went outside in the pouring rain and returned w/ the hotel's towncar. He was going to be driving himself and Davy to the airport..can you imagine being on the highway , looking over, and seeing those two in the car?

Anyway..he came back in and posed for pictures and autographs. He then said he was iratated that Davy was late..he made another phone call to Davy.

Well ..who would appear at the top of the stairs as if he was the King of England? Davy Jones..he was dressed in a suit and tie, and hair was fresh and clean. He stood at the top and looked over like he was making a grand appearance, Micky just rolled his eyes. He comes down stairs and tells the bell hop to get his bags (unlike Micky who took care of his own). He then came over to us and hung out for a few , signed autographs and posed for pictures while Micky was putting the bags in the back of the car. Davy Jones doesnt get his hands dirty..LOL

With Micky driving, they then drove away for the highway in a town car. I can imagine the faces of the people on the highway looking over at 2 Monkees.. shock horror LOL

Sue, there are no full length professional recordings of the Monkees' concert tours throughout the '80s and '90s, unfortunately. Why their concerts have never been filmed is beyond me. However, there are many unofficial ones available. Stuff like the Greek Theater show with Mike in '86 is widely circulated, as are videos of the '97 UK tour. But then again, there are a lot of unofficial video recordings of every US tour since 1986. It's more rare to find a video of the '89 European/Japanese shows, or any of the Australian tours from '86-'88 for that matter.

However, there is one official video release now that I think of it. It is a concert from the '88 Australian tour that was released by Davy's promotional company. The video stinks though! Whoever shot it must have been warped. There are rarely any wide shots and basically whoever is singing the lead vocal is shown close up for the whole song! Plus, the performance is fairly uninspired.

It's a sin that none of the Monkees' concerts from the last 15 years have been professionally filmed. There was mention in a '96 issue of Monkee Business Fanzine that the Canadian music channel MuchMusic (eqivalent to MTV) filmed one of the Canadian concerts in '96, but I never heard anything more of it. Allegedly the final week of the '87 tour in Vegas was filmed too.

Check out Rhino's "Heart and Soul Videography" for concert clips.

I can see, in a way, how it would be futile to listen and discuss some songs that were picked by someone else and handed to The Monkees, particularly to Micky and Davy, with the stigma of "we want you to record this, here's the lyrics". It's like asking the workers at Oscar Mayer to review and reminisce the making of the slices of bologna they produced. Okay, bad analogy...

At least there were some songs like "Take a Giant Step" or "Papa Gene's Blues" where something happened during the recording sessions that made some songs stand out from the rest for the guys.

I agree with Mark T. and others on Chip Douglas producing. I also believe Mike should be part of it also in his "own" way, even though he has not been physically present at the concerts, but his music and spirit has.

My other thought as far as catchy album cover, I think they should use all of the album covers from past to present, including their solo projects (possibly), make a collodge out of album covers, something like a Magic Eye (3D picture) which pops out with the Monkee's Guitar logo. I believe this will symbolize the accomplishments of guys then and now. For those who are familiar with Magic Eye Art, you know what I mean as far as the image popping out of no where. And of course, the typical reaction is "I Get It" when you see the image. Something the Monkee's critics seldom see and understand, which has been an old topic from the old Monkees Board Discussions from this past Winter. Remember the Washington, DC review! That reporter didn't get it and she probably never will, but we let her know by sending her letters and E-Mails!

Here's hoping the Monkee's are seriously taking this recording project into consideration and maybe using the above idea for an album cover. I would be thrilled to death.

Peter?  Sumbissive??

From: Leigh Angela

Comments

No way is Peter submissive and inexperienced in the first place. I would say Micky and Mike. Their senses of humor always bouncing off of each other, they would be one of those "best friend" couples. Peter and Davy I could see as one of those old couples who have been together for so long they don't listen to each other anymore, just talk back and forth at each other.

From: Mark T.

You would think, though, that it would be interesting, for example, for Nez to sit down and weed through his '68/'69 Monkees sessions. In a rather recent interview Mike had forgotten that he did "While I Cry" while in the Monkees! It seems he needs to brush up on his recording history with the band sometimes, and to me at least, digging in the archives would be like searching through a long lost treasure chest from your past.

Plus, the Monkees as a group spent a lot of time together in the studio in 1967...and it just surprises me that after all that fighting for artistic freedom, they don't want to revisit the fruits of their victory.

Bottom line for me, if I were one of the Monkees and had a chance, say Micky had a chance, to listen to some of his '69 sessions (like the ones for "Mommy and Daddy"), I'd be thrilled to do that. Even if it was just for the fun of listening to yourself and the ideas you had some 30 years ago.

Hmmmm, maybe I'm just on a different wavelength here!

So it's pretty good huh? I would like to make a scrap book for my sons, since it was their first concert and attach the ticket stubs. Could you get me one of those Tour Books? Let me know and we'll make arrangements.

Tried to see if Monkeescott could get one for me, but I guess he is vacationing in Knoxville. Friday, 7/6 is the big day for him.

Hi ~ I am glad you got to go to the show Suzanne! I had an incredibletime- I was not as close as I thought. I was going to post a review on the Monkees Alert, but Suzannes's will do just fine. Insert- The personable performance- like when a young girl gave flowers to Davy & he put the card in his pocket & the young mentally challenged guy shook hands with him & was so excited. There were fabulous- Suzanne you probably saw me-I has a baby tee w/Monkeys on it & pins. I could not control myself! I tried to get backstage, but the security wouldn't let me-I am harmless-you know how it is though- it takes a while to realize that you are really there in the same room with the Monkees!!! I am probably going to the Buffalo show(fingers crossed) I got a tour book-$15 full color-not much wording, but a keeper-about 7" X 10" 20 pages mostly recent shots, family stuff- I already had the stuffed Monkee so the tour book was all I could afford considering I got a flat on the way there. Last show I got a $100 speeding ticket trying to get there! No priceon my love for them~ Peace,Love & Monkees Forever~ Kimberly K

Well you see, our concert crowd was very boring and dull, so it was quite easy to make the people around us laugh. We were the rowdy bunch, I'm not exagerating AT ALL. The venue was very small, nice padded chairs and you could see every one in the crowd and I was about right smack dap in the middle. It's not boasting to say that me and my friend were the loudest two in the whole place. It was actually a dissapointment (but not too much ;) They were auctioning off this guitar and the bidder would get backstage after the show but like, no one was bidding and I kept saying things like, "Come on people, do it for me! I'm poor!" and most people would laugh. And then Peter brought out this banjo and was giving a mini history lesson and with my love of banjos I just screamed out, "Woo! Banjo!" And Peter stopped talking, they looked at eachother and started laughing and Peter continued with, "That's right, this is Mr.Banjo." It was quite great. So when we were at the stage door the man was saying, "If you're not on the list you need to leave!" And I was saying, "What list? How come I didn't know about this infamous list? How do I get on the list? I want to be on the list!" And the people around me sort of laughed. So then I said, "Mr. Man, will you give these to them?" Just something we had made, and he pulled me in. So I'm not too sure. But Lacey had gotten through the door and she pulled me through as well. And it's really cliche and unfair to guys, but it helps if you're a young, pretty thing. We probably wouldn't have gotten back if Lacey hadn't been there. She's 19, blonde, flat tummy, and charming. You HAVE TO be persistent, don't give up! But don't try to sex up the security guards or anything, because that will not get you anywhere. So I don't know man, it's a mystery, but good luck!

Been a fan for 30+ years ... since the beginning. I remember my aunt took my brother and I to see them at the Chicago Stadium .... nosebleed section... needed binoculars. So, the House of Blues was great! Second generation, my daughter [25] loves them too. Drew a great picture of Davy and gave it to him at House of Blues concert. Great to have that mother/daughter love of the Monkees. Just can't decide on a favorite. Maybe it would be "No Time" to see my 2 grandchildren [ages 2&3] dance to it. Gee! 3rd generation love of the Monkees!!

Ha ha! Oh my gosh! That's so funny! You know there's no debate whatsoever, Mike and Micky by a long shot! I mean there are SO many clues! I'm sure Stacey could remember them better than I could. but they're more often than not, going off by themselves. And just watch the "Gift Horse" episode, the salt on Mike's hand! And "Justus", notice where Micky puts his hand when Mike disappears....suspiscious indeed. It's just funny that you mention this because we have this inside joke about it, just silly. Of course it is Micky and Peter rip off eachother's clothes in that one episode. My gosh, that's so painstakingly obvious why they put that in the show. I mean what girl hasn't thought, "they should rip off eachother;s clothing...." and then! Whatdya know. Nerds. (Micky: "Well I was a nerd anyway!") Haha! Good times. good times.

Hi Cory:

Listening to the cords Peter was playing during the interview, it sound like "Giant Step" to me.

As far as the naked girl in front of Micky on "You and I", I think that has something to do with the Mike's Magic Glasses skit in which Micky was seeing things naked or invisible throughout the video. You & I was my favorite part of the video, along with Circle Sky.

The video copy of Justus that I have, I'm not too impressed with the quality of it. The sound is poor, especially when Mike is speaking. Had to listen pretty hard to hear him and understand what he is saying. The other thing that was bothering was the flashing back and forth with the camera crew and other things for the first 3/4 of the video. I was pretty distracted. How about you?

Does anyone know David's feelings on the song "She Hangs Out"? Because it really seems like he gets a big kick out of that song. He rocks out on the version they play in the show. And he was by far the most energetic on that song at the concert. He was doing this awesome moonwalk thing. David gets down, man!

You know, when my parent's retired and they had the time to do it, they worked on the family album, by putting the pictures in order, gluing them in an album instead of them sitting in a shoe box, then finally sitting back when it was all done to recall memories. Possibly this is the process for the reissues.

I think her name is Christi (not Miss Blue Dork Stick) - mijacageo66@aol.com (wouldn't the REAL Micky spell mijacOgeo right??) and avadore123@aol.com

The unknown claims to be Mike - monkee9847@aol.com (Why would Mike's s/n and email have anything to do w/ the Monkees?!)

Just watch out for them. They really hurt a friend of mine. I have the convos that I've had w/ them on my site... but for some reason you can't get to it. Maybe it's just my computer. http://www.geocites.com/beachwooddrive/index.html

We hope to see some of you there! I will try and get pics online of this one...I do have a really bad pic of us at http://hometown.aol.com/seanoz We were dead tired there because the show didn't start until 10:00- it was 8:00 there, and we had been up since 6:30am because of school! Ok far out. I don't think I'll have any problems being loud and amuzing. When we were in Lowell I made all the people around me laughed and giggle by saying either things really loud or just by being myself. The people that sat behind us actually saw my friend at her work and was like, "didn't you see the Monkees in Lowell?" and my friend said "Yeah, you sat behind us" and she said "Yeah, you were with that crazy girl!" hehe, what can I say. If anyone was there I was the girl who screamed from the balcony during dead silence "Peter I love you!" I made more than just two row turn around when I shouted that out, most likely because it was during a pause. Ah well. I'll do my best and pray. Too bad I'm not like a year older. 19 would be perfect to get back there, too bad I also look young....

Capitol put NO money into anything any more (they haven't signed an artist in years), and BMG is a distributor just like WEA, not a label. Rhino's box sets are a major staple for any large chain, esp. at Christmas. (The chain I buy for, Virgin Megastores, sold has sold lots of the Rhino Brain Box and the Doo Wop collection, just to name a couple.) Rhino may never have a #1, but their stuff sells steadily and pays the rent, as well as having a very low return rate. Also, they take chances (like taking on the Monkees) which almost no label will do any more. I may be the only person on this board who thinks this, but I say BRAVO RHINO!
